And I'm back – after 2.5 weeks on antibiotics for a nasty chest infection, I can finally smell and taste again. YEAH! What better way to kick off tasting again than a Tohu Whenua Awa – Awatere Valley, Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Marlborough NZ – a new series of wines from Tohu – the Whenua single vineyard wines are "a gift from the land, our tūrangawaewae, the place where we stand. Silky smooth palate with lots of lovely grapefruity acidity, passionfruit & savoury herb flavours – textured, zesty, med-dry finish – clean, refreshing and just gorgeous! Another gorgeous white from the Tohu "Whenua Matua" range – Albarino 2018 from Upper Moutere, small parcel Kuiti (Narrow) Block. Planted 2011. Ancient Moutere alluvium clay soils, featuring deeply weathered and dissected gravels. Gravity-feed into the press, the resulting juice settled in stainless steel tanks• cool fermentation with carefully selected strains of aromatic yeast sourced from Spain, home of Albarino. Racked off yeast lees and left to mature in tank for around three months before filtering and bottling more: https://www.tohuwines.co.nz/about-whenua Notes: Medium gold / straw in colour – nice oily viscosity, gorgeous nose of honeyed limes & mandarin notes.
