2013 Spiegelau International Wine Competition Results
Chardonnay Awarded Champion Wine of the Show
Amidst an evening of success and celebration, a Chardonnay was announced ‘Champion Wine of the Show’ during the 2013 Spiegelau International Wine Competition awards dinner held in Auckland last night.
Matua took top honours with their Single Vineyard Marlborough Chardonnay 2012, a wine clearly following in the footsteps of the multi award-winning 2011 vintage.
In addition, three New Zealand producers shared the coveted title ‘Champion Producer’. Johanneshof Cellars, a small Marlborough producer who entered just five wines but received two trophies, Saint Clair Family Estate who excelled with six gold medals across six different wine styles and Villa Maria Estate with the trophy Viognier and five gold medals also awarded across a range of styles.
Competition Director, Belinda Jackson explained, “It was far too hard to decide which company had performed the best in this show when all three excelled. Rather than eliminate any of them, we wanted to celebrate each one’s tremendous achievements”.
The class trophies were split between New Zealand winning nine, Australia winning four and France and Portugal winning one apiece. Of the New Zealand winners, Marlborough was awarded six trophies, Hawke’s Bay two and Nelson one.
