Anchorage Wines from Nelson

I last reviewed wines from Chris Drummond’s Anchorage Family Estate back in 2011 when I tried the 2009 Pinot Noir, 2010 Chardonnay and 2010 Sauvignon Blanc. I rated all three as very good quality, well made wines, so was not surprised when I started to open and taste the latest half a dozen sent over from Nelson.

Torrent Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Pale almost clear wine, tropical, passion-fruit and green grassy punch in the nose, lovely crisp clean acidity, succulent mouth-filling and textured wine, clean refreshing finish… RRP NZ$15.50

Anchorage Family Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2012
Soft pale green in colour, pungent green herbal slightly capsicum nose, with fresh  tropical fruit, bright zingy acidity and more green capsicum and gooseberry on the palate – a luscious savvy with a succulent moreish finish. RRP NZ$18.00

Anchorage Family Estate Pinot Gris 2012
Pale lemon/straw in colour with a fresh nose of spiced pear, mouth-filling fresh & fruity acidity, pears and spice again with some sweetness, quite complex, layered with pleasing texture, long finish – need another glass! Check! – great wine with Thai food? RRP NZ$18.00

Anchorage Family Estate Classic Riesling 2011
Pale with hints of lemon in the glass, sweet stone fruit and citrus in the nose, initial sweetness on the palate leading into a gentle green apple and lemon acidity, lingering – A very pleasant and elegant wine A/V 10%  … RRP NZ$18.00

Anchorage Family Estate Pinot Noir 2011
Medium ruby in colour, shy in the nose but hints of red berry fruit and savoury notes, nice up-front red berry fruit concentration supported by nicely integrated tannins and acidity on the palate, quite persistent initially but then finishes softly, elegantly… Very good value Pinot Noir at just RRP NZ$20.00

Anchorage Family Estate Reserve Pinot Noir 2011
Bright raspberry red in the glass, sweet / savory nose of earthy smokey oak & dark fruit, then on the palate BAM! Intense fruit forward wine all red berries, plums, with a nice punch of oak / tannin into a long mouth-filling finish… I can see why Sam Kim of Wine Orbit awarded this 90 points. Stunning wine at RRP NZ$30.00
