Hunter’s have won two gold medals at the San Francisco International Wine Competition 2017.
Winning two gold medals at the 2017 San Francisco International Wine Competition has been a “ breakthrough moment ” for family-owned winery Hunter’s, says Chief Winemaker James Macdonald.
The 2016 Hunter’s Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won gold and 93 points, while the 2014 Hunter’s Marlborough Pinot Noir picked up gold and 90 points at the prominent wine show.
Hunter’s Chief Winemaker James Macdonald says the awards will help enlighten American wine drinkers about the quality of New Zealand wine and Hunter’s wine in particular.
“It’s a bit of a breakthrough for our wines, especially our Pinot Noir to be recognised in America, which is something of an emerging market for us,” James says.
“For a long time, our bone-dry Sauvignon Blanc and elegant Pinot Noir was not always appreciated. These medals show that palates are evolving and that the future is bright for Hunter’s in the USA.”
The Sauvignon Blanc is produced with fruit sourced from the central Wairau sub-region of Marlborough – an area renown for producing the distinct grapefruit and passionfruit flavours found in the region’s flagship variety.
The Pinot Noir is produced with fruit grown in the clay soils of the Southern Valleys of Marlborough, which adds masculine elements and more structure and depth of flavour to the wine.
Hunter’s managing director Jane Hunter, CNZM, OBE says the awards reinforce the quality of their wine.
“By and large New Zealand Pinot Noir is not well known in America, and recognition at this level shows consumers that it is definitely worth trying,” Jane says.
“We’ve been making award-winning wine for more than 30 years now, and it’s a real credit to our winemaking team and innovative approach in the vineyard that we’ve kept up with trends and changing styles throughout the past thirty years.”
Hunter’s Wines are available across New Zealand and internationally at all good wine retailers.
