The Brennan Vineyards are situated in the dramatic Gibbston sub-region of Central Otago, New Zealand. The Brennans have always felt that Gibbston can offer the perfect conditions for producing their wines, bought the land in Gibbston in 1994 and began establishing the vineyard, planting some of the first vines in this region. Murray Brennan, Sean’s father, was born in Auckland and while studying at Otago University, he was drawn to Central Otago and Gibbston in particular. Over the following years Murray and his family kept their connection with Gibbston and Sean regularly visited the region from a very young age.
Sean Brennan launched the Brennan label with the intention of producing limited quantities of iconic wines that truly represent the potential of this exceptional wine region. Sean is winemaker for Brennan Wines, and insists on sourcing fruit only from his family vineyards. He has created Brennan Wines to produce limited quantities of exceptional wine that truly represent what this region has to offer. Their fruit is sourced entirely from the family vineyards and Sean maintains intimate control in the winery. At Brennan, they feel that the only way to produce wines of great integrity is to have complete control at every step.
When it is time to harvest Sean already has a good understanding of the vintage, having monitored the vines throughout the season. Careful consideration is given to each variety and the style of wine to be made from it. While the challenges of the environment are immense, the potential is even greater, and with an extreme perfectionist producing Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Grigio and Gewurztraminer, the outcome has to be remarkable.
