CharRees is a small family owned boutique vineyard situated just off state highway one on southern edge of Ashburton, 1 hour from Christchurch. The CharRees vineyard story began in 2007 when Charles & Esma Hill’s visionary dream of owning a vineyard / restaurant became a reality when they bought an established vineyard on the outskirts of Ashburton in January 2007.
The vineyard which was established in 1999 now consists of 4000 Pinot Gris and 3500 Pinot Noir vines, and in 2008 they planted 1800 Riesling vines as well. Upon picking their first vintage in 2008 they have now established their own label “CharRees”. The name “CharRees” derives from the owners’ Christian names Charles & Esma plus daughters, Charlotte and Sheree.
CharRees aims for quality wines produced from their vineyards and Mid Canterbury’s climate helps the grapes mature slowly at a steady pace creating an ideal ripening environment. They are passionate about producing quality wine as opposed to quantity, hence they put a lot of love and labour into the vineyard.
With this in mind, the grapes from CharRees Vineyard are selectively hand harvested for optimum flavour from this terroir, and are then taken to their wine maker in Waipara. They won their first medal at the 2011 International Aromatic Wine Competition as part of the Canterbury A & P Show awarded a Bronze for their 2010 vintage Pinot Gris.
