Kuratau River Wines

Kuratau River Wine - Floating Rock Cafe and Winery
Kuratau River Wines is more than just a fabulous vineyard; it’s a totally unique experience for visitors and guests. Located above the Kuratau River, on the edge of ancient Lake Taupo, they produce an exclusive range of wines from Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir vines planted in 2004. Reflecting their commitment to the community and the environment their vineyard has been accredited as “Sustainable” by Sustainable Wines NZ. Their philosophy is an experience you’ll never forget, that doesn’t cost the earth.

The vineyard has been established on deep pumice and gravel soils laid down by the many volcanic eruptions that have shaped the region. Coupled with the warm days and cool nights during the summer ripening period, this helps produce wines with distinct, and delicious, varietal characteristics. To ensure their wines reflect the regional terroir, they are all produced from handpicked grapes harvested from their single block vineyard.

They planted their first vines in 2004, dedicating their passion to creating exquisite, hand-crafted wines from Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir grapes. The combination of the local climate and pumice loam soil created by years of volcanic activity work to deliver a unique range of wines that they are exceptionally proud of. They produced their first vintage wines of Pinot Grigio and Blanc de Noir in 2007, and have since extended their range to include an award-winning Methode Traditionelle and a Late-Harvest Pinot Gris Ice Wine.
