Mangapapa Estates Scoops 4 medals at San Francisco International Wine Competition
Hawkes Bay boutique winery Mangapapa Estates has scooped four medals at the prestigious San Francisco International Wine Competition with its Chateau Waimarama branded wines.
More than 4,500 wines were judged at this year’s competition and out of the four wines entered, all Chateau Waimarama wines attained medals, a Gold Medal, two Silvers and one Bronze.
The Gold Medal was for Chateau Waimarama’s 2009 Hawkes Bay Cabernet Sauvignon.
The two Silvers were for another 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2009 Syrah produced by Chateau Waimarama and the Bronze medal for the 2009 Merlot.
“We were thrilled to be awarded these four medals and to receive Gold was absolutely brilliant,” said Mangapapa Esates Director Chase Arquette.
“For a little boutique winery to be awarded these medals is fantastic, especially with all the wines coming from our 4 hectare block in Hawkes Bay, added Mr Arquette.
“This win will certainly reinforce Chateau Waimarama’s brand and wines internationally and more so to our discerning clients in Japan where 3 container loads go to yearly and will certainly mean our orders will double if not triple,” Mr Arquette said.
The San Francisco Wine Competition result follows on the heels of the New Zealand International Wine Show where a Chateau Waimarama 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon attained a Gold medal. The only New Zealand wine in the Cabernet Sauvignon class, to do so.
“It’s great to see that the investment spent in the vineyard over the last 10 years by the owner Mr Shigeru Sato with new clones and rootstocks is starting to come to fruition.” Mr Arquette said.
Mr Shigeru Sato hopes that one day Chateau Waimarama wines will grace many top wine lists around the world as they do in Japan and further cement Hawkes Bay as one of the top red growing areas in the world.
