MATUA CROWNED CHAMPION WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR AT NZ INTERNATIONAL WINE SHOW
Off the back of an impressive three Trophies, five Gold, five Silver and 10 Bronze medals, Matua Chief Winemaker Nikolai St George was crowned Nissan NZ Champion Winemaker of the Show at New Zealand’s largest wine competition, the New Zealand International Wine Show, announced on Saturday night.
The star of the Matua portfolio was the Matua Single Vineyard Matheson Syrah 2013 which claimed a Gold medal and two Trophies – the Federal Merchants Trophy for Champion NZ Syrah and the San Pellegrino Trophy for Champion Shiraz/Syrah – the latter an outstanding result for Matua and New Zealand in a class traditionally dominated by Australian wine.
Also highly lauded was the Matua Single Vineyard Hawke’s Bay Albarino 2014, which claimed the Southern Wind Trophy for Champion Other White Varieties and a Gold medal.
Other Gold medals for Matua were awarded to the Matua Lands and Legends Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013, the Matua Single Vineyard Awatere Sauvignon Blanc 2014, and the Matua Single Vineyard Hawke’s Bay Malbec 2013.
Nikolai St George, Matua Chief Winemaker was humbled to have received so many awards for so many varietals across the portfolio. “Matua has always been renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, it’s 41 years since Matua co-founders Bill and Ross Spence produced New Zealand’s first Sauvignon back in 1974. It feels like we’re continuing their pioneering spirit by pushing our winemaking and viticulture to even higher standards. It’s great to see wines like Albari?o coming to the fore, as well as our Hawke’s Bay reds and Syrah in particular. We’ve only made it twice and each time it’s been a trophy winner.”
“I’m also rapt to see so many of our Single Vineyard wines making headlines. These represent the most interesting varietals that we make from small hand-selected fruit parcels from our best vineyards. We’ve just released eight new Single Vineyard wines – and big congratulations must go to the winemaking and viticultural team for producing some of our finest vintages to date,” says St George.
