Mud House Estate release Waipara Valley Pinot Gris and Riesling

Having already catapulted into the fifth month, that is May, it feels like winter is finally here. The Summer of Riesling has come to a close and it is amidst these shorter days, that Mud House releases the 2013 Mud House Estate The Mound Vineyard Waipara Valley Riesling and Home Block Waipara Valley Pinot Gris; in the hope of wringing out the last remaining drops of summer.

Waipara is quickly gathering momentum, becoming recognised as one of New Zealand’s top aromatic wine producing regions. Riesling is all about site and place, and Waipara is steadily developing a name for becoming a top producer of this variety.

The 2013 Mud House Estate Riesling is lively and balanced; up front mineral acidity leads into delicate phenolics, giving a complex and seamless line and length. The Mound Vineyard had a fantastic growing season in 2013. The warm and stable summer provided the best possible growing conditions for fruit and flavour development. Crop weights were on the lighter side and this added to the intensity of flavour and solid acidity.

Group Winemaker; Ben Glover, likens Riesling to a mirror-like substance that reflects the place in which it hails, or it has “a dark side” and he believes Waipara can produce Riesling on either scale.

“Our Estate Riesling has pure qualities of lemonade, lime pith characters and a dry finish providing extra nuances and subtle complexities. It is just coming into the zone now!” Ben said.

The 2013 Mud House Estate Home Block Waipara Valley Pinot Gris is richly aromatic, with notes of quince, pear and a hint of cardamon spice on the nose. The succulent and generous mouth feel, is given structure and balance by the beautifully ripe phenolics, followed by a long, elegant and mouth-watering dry finish.

The 10 year old vines at our Home Block Vineyard provide superb concentration and complexity in the wine, “a little bit of sweetness goes a long way with this wine – rich unctuous and provides quince, cinnamon and strudel notes, a gorgeous wine, supple and easy going”, Ben said.

The Mud House Estate range is made with minimal intervention to be a true representation of the vintage and vineyard site.
End.
