Mud House Pinot Noir receives gold at New World Wine Awards third year running
Mud House has been awarded a gold medal at the 2014 New World Wine Awards, for the 2013 Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noir. The Pinot Noir was also named in the New World Top 50 Wine Guide, as one of the Top 50 wines in the show. This is the third consecutive year that Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noir has received a gold medal in the New World Wine Awards.
The 2013 Mud House Pinot Noir was described by judges as having, “aromas of black plums and savoury game. The palate is balanced with oak and succulent tamarillo with a long fruit finish. An ideal match for slow cooked rabbit casserole with lots of garlic and thyme, served with a hot crunchy ciabatta loaf”
The New World Wine Awards is a unique show, in that the wines entered must retail for below $25.00 per bottle and there must be at least 6,000 bottles available for sale following the awards. The organisers state that the criteria for entry are affordability and availability.
Mud House Winemaker, Nadine Worley is delighted the Pinot Noir has received a gold medal from this show, for the third year running. “Our Claim 431 Vineyard in Bendigo, where the fruit for our Central Otago Pinot Noir is grown, continues to deliver year on year. The team on the ground at Claim 431 do a fantastic job in delivering the best possible fruit, which allows us to craft the best possible Pinot Noir each year,” Nadine said.
The 2013 vintage was a winner, starting with little tickle of frost, followed by warm but not excessively hot temperatures. There was a fantastic balance between canopy growth and fruit loading. Harvest began a little later than usual on the 5th of April. Typically, harvest at Claim 431 lasts for two weeks; however the 2013 vintage was slightly longer with the final block harvested 3 weeks later. Typical dark fruit, plum and dried herb flavours were evident in the fruit as it ripened and berries maintained good integrity.
