The 2016 Mud House Waipara Valley Riesling has been awarded Best White Wine Buy of the Year in the 26th edition of New Zealand’s Wines 2018 – Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide.

This Riesling bursts with textural layers and notes of ginger and citrus, singing to the tune of the exceptional Indian summer vintage of 2016 in Waipara, which provided a beautifully warm ripening season.

Mud House Winemaker Cleighten Cornelius said the higher residual sugar of this Riesling ‘raised the volume’ of the mouthfeel, yet was not overtly sweet and still retains its dry and crisp finish.

“The cool nights and warm days create mouth-watering fresh acidity with floral and spicy notes. This spiciness is very special to Waipara,” he said.

Highly acclaimed New Zealand wine journalist Michael Cooper described this wine in his book as a distinctively medium style (28g/l) with loads of drink-young charm.

“Bright, light lemon and green, it is attractively scented, with strong, vibrant citrusy flavours, hints of passionfruit and ginger, mouth-watering acidity and a persistent finish.”

Cleighten said the vintage of 2016 was an incredible one, and having this wine featured as Best White Wine Buy of the Year in Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide was great recognition.

“Hundreds of wines have been featured in Michael Cooper’s books over the years, and to have our Riesling chosen as Best White Wine Buy for 2018, is a real honour,” said Cleighten.

In 2009 Michael Cooper was awarded the Sir George Fistonich Medal in recognition of services to New Zealand Wine. He has written 42 books with several major literary awards to his credit, and is weekly wine columnist for The Listener.
