Mud House Sponsors Ladies Helm racing at Waikawa Boating Club

Mud House is encouraging women in the Marlborough community to share their taste for adventure through sailing, as the new sponsor of the Waikawa Boating Club Ladies Helm racing series.

The Ladies Helm race is the first of the official series, and is held over two races, held on the 23rd December and 13th January. The trophy is awarded to the top boat helmed by a lady.

Waikawa Boating Club Manager, Sue van Velzen is pleased to have more exposure and support for the event.

“We’ve certainly noticed an increase in the number of women wanting to take part in this series, many of which started in our learn to sail series and carried on as members in the club which is fantastic. We are very keen to encourage more females to crew and to helm and take part in this wonderful sport”, Sue said.

Mud House will donate wine to the Waikawa Boating Club which will be used as prizes for the racing series winners.

Mud House has a proud history with sailing, going back 20 years to the wines’ founders who sailed into the Marlborough Sounds and fell in love with the region. Mud House has been the official wine supplier to the Emirates Team New Zealand since 2005 at the Valencia America’s Cup Challenge. The opportunity to now support a local yachting club feels like a very natural fit.

Mud House Winemaker, Cleighten Cornelius is a keen sailor and is excited to see Mud House become further involved in the sport, following his Cook Strait adventure in the recent Wine Works Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Wine Race.

“Conditions for sailing in the Marlborough Sounds are picturesque, we are very lucky to have this resource in our backdoor. It is great to see Mud House backing the racing at the Waikawa Boating Club,” Cleighten said.

The racing series will be held in the scenic Marlborough Sounds, a stone’s throw from Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife sanctuary of which Mud House is a proud Rimu sponsor.
