The New Zealand International Wine Show – 2013
Established in 2005, the New Zealand International Wine Show is the largest competition held in New Zealand each year. Wines from any country and from any variety can be entered and this year 2005 entries were received from 14 countries resulting in 201 gold medals being awarded.
The show was chaired by Bob Campbell MW, New Zealand’s most experienced senior wine judge and this country’s leading wine educator. Assistant chief judges were Larry McKenna, Peter Cowley and, from Australia, Ralph Kyte-Powell.
The competition this year provided the industry with its first major assessment of the 2013 vintage for our most important variety, Sauvignon Blanc. From the largest vintage ever for Sauvignon Blanc, the judges awarded 24 gold and 42 silver medals from the 179 entries from the 2013 vintage. This is a great result and New Zealand and our export markets will enjoy many excellent wines.
New Zealand’s other major export variety, Pinot Noir, enjoyed a successful show with 24 wines awarded gold medals.
For the 5th time a Chardonnay has been crowned Nissan Champion Wine of the Show. Nautilus Marlborough Chardonnay 2012 was selected as the top wine from the 21 gold medal Chardonnays and then, after voting by all of the senior judges, was declared the supreme winner.
In total the judges awarded 201 golds, 392 silvers and 848 bronze medals.
