Murdoch James – NZ Wine Website of the Week

“Out there is a perfect wine” Barbara Turner was heard to say, when she, Roger and Jill Fraser stood on a knoll in front of a derelict winery and looked at a forlorn 15 acre vineyard they had just bought in 1998. Prophetic words? Nearly there? That sentiment keeps the team focused and dedicated to making premium wines.

The Murdoch James Vineyard situated in Martinborough in the Wairarapa Valley north east of Wellington. The Blue Rock vineyard with it’s lime based soils and unique elevated position, produces wines of finesse and character; the three Pinot Noirs exhibit many similarities with the best of Burgundy, whilst the Syrah compares well with wines from the Northern Rhone.

Murdoch James are famous for their consistent output of premium Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc as well as a fortified Pinot Noir port, ‘The McIntyre’. They believe that premium grapes make premium wines, and all they do is focussed on making the very best from what nature provides them.

For a total “wine escape” the Murdoch James Vineyard provides a venue for weddings, dining and functions at Bloom Restaurant, tastings, tours and accommodation in the Winemakers Cottage and other special offers and packages.
