Borthwick – NZ Wine Website of the Week

Nestled amongst the quiet tranquillity in the heart of the Wairarapa, North of Wellington, New Zealand lies the family vineyard of Borthwick Estate. Established in 1996 adhering to the traditional values of winemaking, the 27 hectares of vines meld easily into a landscape that is exceedingly sought after.

The peaceful surroundings of the riverside vineyard are conducive to excellent grape growing conditions. The stony, free draining alluvial soils and special micro climate allow the grapes to grow in harmony in their environment, revelling in the serenity and uniqueness of their surroundings. The renowned quality of the grapes grown here is as much in part to the terroir of the vineyard as it is the winemaking skill of founder Paddy Borthwick.

Warm daily temperatures, cool nights and low rainfall enhance the exceptional quality of fruit produced every harvest. The handcrafted and distinctive wines which include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Merlot are produced and bottled exclusively from grapes grown in the vineyard and reflect the true characteristics of the region.

With a passion for the region and for truly great craftsmanship in winemaking and viticulture, Paddy and his Borthwick Estate label are destined to be the benchmark by which boutique vineyards measure their wines by.
