Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard and winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick, owned by winemakers – Anna & Jason Flowerday. The 11 Ha vineyard which has predominantly loam over clay soils, was planted in 1979 with a mixture of varieties. Yields are kept low, the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and all the fruit is hand picked and hand-sorted.
Their philosophy is wholly centred on making seriously good wine. All their decisions in the vineyard, and in the winery are based around the question “is it going to make the wine better?” They like wines to express their place – to speak of somewhere-ness rather than of a same-ness and they want you to be able to taste this in their wines.
Jason, Anna and team are heavily influenced by organics and bio-dynamics and have a very hands on approach in both the vineyard and the winery. They use a blend of old and new world winemaking techniques combined with respect for the place the grapes are grown.
The wines are made with minimal intervention in a small winery which has been specifically set up for small batch winemaking. TWR produces Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, an aromatic blend called Toru, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
