Raising our glasses to the summit of success – The Mountaineer launches first collection of Central Otago wines.

From the makers of Mount Michael Wines, The Mountaineer is launching an inaugural Pinot Rosé and Pinot Gris alongside a beautiful second vintage Pinot Noir, to form its first-ever collection of quality, artisan wines.

Made by talented head wine maker at Mount Michael Wines, Jody Pagey, each drop in the new range has been carefully handcrafted to provide wine-loving Kiwis an exquisite variety of Central Otago boutique wines at affordable prices, for all to enjoy.

First introduced in 2018, The Mountaineer pays homage to the pioneering spirit and sense of adventure displayed by mountain climbers confronting the forces of nature and celebrates the beauty and grandeur of the New Zealand Southern Alps.

The preparation, passion and commitment necessary to grow and make wines in the Central Otago region mirrors the challenges faced by these pioneering mountaineers.

The Mountaineer is crafted from premium Central Otago fruit, sourced from a single vineyard selected for its bright fruit and balance.
Jody Pagey, Head wine maker at Mount Michael Wines, says: “For more than two decades, Mount Michael Wines has been making award-winning Central Otago wines.

“Last winter we launched The Mountaineer with a new Pinot Noir – which far exceeded all our expectations. Almost one year on, we’ve had time to expand our brand even further and after lots of hard work, perseverance and dedication, we are now set to release our first ever collection, comprising of a Pinot Rosé, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

“Following one of the hottest and wettest summers on record, a healthy harvest of fruit plump with beautiful juices was produced. As a result, I believe the greatest attribute the 2019 vintage will offer is its lively acidity. The wines will also have great purity and freshness – two things I personally love to see in wines from Central Otago.

“As a small and passionate team, we all feel incredibly proud to be introducing our debut collection, which is already causing quite the stir, receiving a handful of prestigious accolades from some of New Zealand’s most recognised wine reviewers and wine awards.”
