Waipara Hills wins Trophy for Best Marlborough Wine at CWSA Best Value Awards

Waipara Hills 2013 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc won the Best Marlborough Wine of the Year at the China Wine and Spirits Awards (CWSA) Best Value competition 2014.

Following much delight in receiving a Double Gold for the Sauvignon Blanc, it was the icing on the cake for Waipara Hills Winemaker, Simon McGeorge, who received the Trophy notification in the mail!

Simon McGeorge, Waipara Hills’ Winemaker, says he couldn’t ask for more. “Getting a Double-Gold and now a trophy at the CWSA is really exciting and a great honour. I look forward to showing this wine off over the next year, with this endorsement,” Simon said.

Simon describes the wine as a generous, lifted style of Sauvignon Blanc, with power and generosity. “I love this wine as it has lovely fresh characters with beautiful crunchy phenolics and bright acidity.”

This is the eighth consecutive vintage that the Waipara Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has received a Gold medal!

The Sauvignon Blanc is the only varietal in the Waipara Hills range, where the fruit is selected from outside the Waipara region. The grapes were picked from both the Wairau and Awatere valleys in Marlborough. The fruit combination from the two valleys produces a textural, concentrated wine with each valley adding a layer of complexity and flavour.

The CWSA is considered to be the biggest wine awards, likened to the wine industry’s equivalent of the Academy Awards in China and Hong Kong. The 2014 competition received a record number of 3,375 entries from 35 countries. Entries were tasted at price levels and medals were awarded to represent ‘Best Value’.
