2014 A golden vintage for Waipara Hills

Waipara Hills received two gold medals at the highly anticipated 2015 New Zealand Royal Easter Show Wine Awards.

In less than a week since the recent Cuisine Magazine, New Zealand Riesling tasting results, where the 2014 Waipara Hills Waipara Valley Riesling took home the number one spot with 5 stars and a best buy award, the team have done it again with two of New Zealand’s other great Aromatic varieties.

At the Royal Easter Show Wine Awards, Waipara Hills won Gold medals for both its 2014 Waipara Valley Pinot Gris and 2014 Waipara Valley Gewürztraminer, an outstanding result from the 2014 vintage in the Waipara region.

Ben Glover, Accolade Group Winemaker, commented that it was a great week for the viticultural and winemaking team in Waipara, headed up by Jean-Luc Dufour and Stephen Dempster with Simon McGeorge in the winery. “It is also a testament to the skill and collaboration between the viticulturists and winemakers, the challenging 2014 vintage put their skills and knowledge to the test and they have achieved fantastic results”.

“To be able to win two gold medals and a five star rating in a week, with our aromatic wines is a buzz, and affirms that our expression of these varieties is on track. Right now I am looking forward to enjoying a glass of Gewürztraminer with some wash rind cheese”, Ben said.

Waipara Valley Vineyard Manager, Jean-Luc Dufour is delighted with the results, with his dedication over the past 20 years now evident. The oldest of the Pinot Gris vines he manages were planted back in 1995, and are now producing incredible fruit. “It was delicious fruit to eat, prior to harvest, no wonder it has created an award winning wine”, says Jean-Luc.
