Rex Pickett’s Sideways Wines Pinot Noir 2020, Central Otago NZ
Ruby / cherry red in colour, semi-translucent medium bodied wine. Fragrant & floral nose with aromas of blackberries, ripe plums, dark cherry & spice. Nicely integrated palate with fine velvety tannins, softer acidity, raspberry & blackberry flavours are underpinned with a savoury earthy note. Well balanced & nicely textured wine. Long elegant finish. Fruit from the Three Miners vineyard in Alexandra, open top ferment, on skins for 4 days, pressed & matured in French oak. Excellent value for a Central Pinot too. RRP:$41.00

Rex Pickett’s Sideways Reserve, Home Estate Pinot Noir, 2020 Wairarapa NZ
Mid garnet / ruby red in colour, slightly opaque, medium bodied wine. A floral, sweet & savoury nose with aromas of ripe plums, dark berries then savoury herb / earth notes and oak spice. Luxurious palate has layers of texture & complexity. Dark berry & plum fruit, then savoury herb & black olive flavours, fine tannins & a ripe juicy acidity. Concentrated, long full flavoured finish. Excellent Wairarapa Pinot. Individual batches of grapes processed & fermented separately, 21 days on skins, 12 months in Oak before blending. My favorite of the 3 Pinots.

Deep garnet to back cherry in colour, medium bodied wine. Ripe cherry, dark berry fruit aromas initially, subtle spiced oak then savoury garden herb notes. Richly textured palate of sweet dark fruit – blackberry, black doris plum, cherry, nicely integrated silky tannins & fine acidity, savoury herb, fine oak spice, long dry finish, very moreish. Rex Pickett’s Sideways Pinot Noir Rosé 2021, Central Otago NZ
Mid salmon pink in colour with pale copper hues, medium bodied. Fresh enticing nose with ‘strawberries and cream’ aromas, then bright raspberry & spice notes. The mid-weighted palate is all about the red summer berries, a crisp acidity and nicely textured, creamy mouthfeel – finishes long & just off-dry. Juicy & Crisp. Shiny light golden in colour with yellow hues, medium legs / viscosity / body. Aromas of ripe peaches, nectarine, apricot, warm spice & nutty oak in the nose. Bright, fruit-forward palate with a gentle grapefruit acidity, lush stone-fruit & nougat flavours, a creamy & textured wine with subtle nutty spice / oak influence. Long juicy finish. Rex Pickett’s Sideways Wines Pinot Gris 2019, Central Otago NZ
Pale straw in colour with subtle green hues. Lovely floral & fragrant nose of crunchy pip fruit, pears & apples, sweet peaches, then orange / tangelo citrus notes. On the palate it’s medium weighted, creamy mouthfeel, with fruit flavours reflecting the nose, crisp apple, pear, sweet stone-fruit & yeasty, brioche & spice notes. Clear light straw gold in colour with pale green hues. Vibrant nose of green herbs, blackcurrant, capsicum & lemon citrus. The palate has passion-fruit & gooseberry fruit flavours with a tart grape-fruity acidity, then sweet tropical fruit emerges – succulent but crisp dry finish! Intensely focused Marlborough Savvy. Nautilus Vintage Rose 2020, Marlborough NZ
Gorgeous pale salmon pink colour with copper hues, fine creamy mousse on pouring, persistent bead / bubbles. A floral & fragrant nose with aromas of red summer berries, stone-fruit, warm bread and spices. The palate begins with strawberry & raspberry fruit flavours, a fine creamy mouthfeel, brioche, spice textural elements supported by a crisp acidity & residual fruit sweetness in a long off-dry finish. Spy Valley ‘Echelon’ 2020 Marlborough NZ
Pale ‘pear flesh’ coloured wine with a creamy mousse on pouring, then fine persistent bead / bubbles. Aromas of pear, peach, lemon & toasted brioche in the nose. Flavours of pear, nectarine & citrus on the palate, a bright crisp line of acidity, subtle yeasty notes & a soft, creamy / mousse / mouthfeel on the off dry finish. Pinot Noir & Chardonnay blend. Yakutin Family Wines ‘Old Chimney’ Cabernet Franc 2020, Matakana NZ
Deep magenta / raspberry red in colour, semi translucent, ample bodied wine. Aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries & plum in the nose & smoky barrel spice notes. Full flavoured palate with concentrated flavours of red berry, cherry & plum reflecting the nose then perfectly integrated tannins & acidity in harmony with subtle spicy / toasty oak. Yakutin Family Wines ‘Black Walnut’ Chardonnay 2019, Matakana NZ
Bright, clear yellow-gold in colour, medium bodied with a light viscosity. Fragrant nose with aromas of ripe lemon & mandarin, nectarines & just a hint of vanilla / butter. The palate is elegant & restrained with flavours of stone-fruit & citrus, a zesty ‘grapefruit’ acid backbone & grippy textural elements, oyster shell & salty minerality, subtle oak. A blend of Awatere Valley & Wairau grapes. Pale straw in colour with light green & golden hues. The enticing & fragrant nose has aromas of tropical fruit, citrus blossom, lemon & lime zest & a whiff of green stalk / herb. The full flavoured & concentrated palate provides tart lemon, lime, sweet capsicum & juicy tropical fruit flavours, while a refreshing acidity & textural elements add depth and character, a persistent long off-dry finish. Graham Norton GN Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Interesting wine, a blend of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 88%, Hawke’s Bay Pinot Gris 8% and Gisborne Chardonnay 4%.
Pale straw in colour with subtle green hues. The nose has aromas of pip fruit, red apple, ripe pear, and a little tropical fruit, pineapple & guava. On the palate a soft, medium-sweet, fruit-driven palate, pip & stone-fruit flavours persist, a gentle acidity / textural grip & a medium off-dry finish. Not your usual zingy Marlborough savvy but a quite delicious, very drinkable & great value wine.

Invivo Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Marlborough NZ
Pale straw in colour with green / gold hues. Aromatic, vibrant nose of lemon & lime citrus & sweet, juicy tropical fruit aromas, a subtle savoury & herb note. The palate is off-dry (6gms rs) & nicely textured with a crisp citrus acid backbone, ripe citrus & tropical fruit flavours reflecting the palate & slight minerality / wet stone mouthfeel. Postage Stamp Wines ‘Generoso’ Montepulciano 2021 Waiheke Island NZ
Deep purple / black cherry in colour to the rim, ample bodied wine with nice legs too! Enticing bouquet with dark & red fruit aromas, blackcurrant, ripe black-doris plum & sweet spices. The palate is soft and supple, smooth & finely textured. Fruit flavours reflecting the palate are intertwined with fine silky tannins, a gentle acidity & subtle oak influence. Beautifully integrated tasty / very drinkable wine. Excellent. Clone TK06640 Montepulciano grapes from the Onetangi Valley were hand harvested, fermented in 2T fermenters & aged in old barrels for 10 months before bottling. Postage Stamp Wines ‘Camino’ Tempranillo 2021, Waiheke Island NZ
Black cherry / purple in colour lighter at the rim, medium- bodied. Fragrant nose of cherry, plum, dark berry, a savoury herb note & vanilla oak. Lovely concentrated palate with dark berry & plum fruit flavours & savoury green herb notes, a lively acid backbone & chalky tannins adding grip & texture, subtle oak and a long bone-dry finish – a taste of Spain but from Waiheke! Excellent. Clone 776 Tempranillo from the Onetangi Valley, was hand harvested, fermented in 2T fermenters, aged in 15% new American oak and remaining old American oak. Postage Stamp Wines ‘Prospect’ Waiheke Red 2021, Waiheke Island NZ
Deep black cherry / dark purple coloured to the rim, medium bodied. The nose has aromas of ripe dark berries & plums, a hint of black olives, savoury earth & spiced oak notes. The palate is very smooth, with lovely silky tannins, a fine acid line, ripe plums & black berry fruit flavours, a little savoury / leather / earth with subtle oak influence. Excellent! 40% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc & 10% Petit Verdot, all from the Onetangi Valley. Hand harvested, fermented separately in 1 or 2 T fermenters, aged in old barrels for 10 months before blending & bottling. Excellent, well priced Bordeaux style red. Bright mid straw in colour with golden hues. The nose is fresh and complex with aromas of white flowers, ripe peach, citrus, sweet apple & nutty, bready notes. Finely textured palate with juicy stone-fruit, apple & citrus, subtle oak & a grape-fruity acidity – a crisp, fruit-driven textural wine with a satisfying long, dry finish.Made from Clone 95 & Clone 15 grapes from the 0.8ha Te Arae vineyard, hand harvested, barrel fermented and aged for 10 months in French oak. Cuvar Winery Guardians, Rivermere Vineyard Chardonnay 2021, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Mid golden coloured with pale green hues, medium plus bodied, oily viscosity. Wonderful nose of smokey oak, peaches, green apple, citrus, spice & butterscotch. The palate is juicy with lush stone-fruit flavours, a zesty citrus acidity, creamy malo & nutty oak influenece, nicely balanced wine with depth and length. I love a good chardonnay – this is a great chardonnay! Excellent! RRP:$44.00

Cuvar Winery ‘Guardians’ Cornerstone Rosé, Cabernet Franc 2023 Hawke’s Bay NZ
Pretty pale salmon in colour, light viscosity. Immediate strawberries & cream aromas in the nose with a slight peppery spice note to follow. Refreshing tart raspberry & sweet strawberry fruit flavours on the palate, with a crisp acidity and juicy berry-fruit sweetness, nicely textured with an off dry finish. Serve slightly chilled for a delicious autumn evening sip – smoked salmon on a cracker – Yum!

Deep black cherry / garnet in colour to the rim, medium bodied. The nose has aromas of dark berries, juicy ripe plums, warm spices & smokey oak notes. Concentrated palate with dark berry, cherry & plum fruit flavours, then nice grippy tannins / acid backbone with vanilla oak & creamy malo influence adding lovely textures & mouthfeel. Deep cherry – red garnet in colour, translucent, medium bodied. In the nose, raspberry, cherry & plum fruit aromas are followed by subtle chocolate & oak spice notes. Mid lemon / gold in colour medium bodied, Light viscosity. In the nose, aromas of stone-fruit, apple & a grapefruit, nice yeasty lees / barrel spice too. Well rounded palate with a fine line of citrus acidity, lush fruit flavours reflecting the palate & layers of texture and complexity. Bright salmon pink in colour, pale orange hues, nice legs too! Aromas of stone-fruit, apricot, peach, red berries & spice in the nose. From Sir George Fistonich’s new range of wines. Bright pale watermelon pink in colour. Fragrant nose with aromas of strawberries, cream, smoker lollies & spice. Medium bodied palate with vibrant red berry fruit flavours, creamy but with zesty acidity & fine textural elements. Long off-dry finish. m.a.u. wines ‘Pink Ensemble Rosé’ 2023, Clevedon Auckland NZ
A blend of Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. Bright clear, pale salmon pink in colour, medium bodied. Aromatic nose of red berries, white stone-fruit, apple, savoury & spice notes. Lots of red berries, cherry, red stone-fruit & spice flavours on the palate, a crisp acidity & nice grippy textural / mineral elements. Long intense, bone-dry finish. The ’22 was Dish Magazine’s 1st equal Rose 2023.

Delta Estate ‘River Delta’ Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Marlborough NZ
Pale straw almost clear with soft lemon / gold hues, light viscosity / body. In the nose vibrant typically Marlborough ‘savvy’ aromas of gooseberry, passion-fruit, tart citrus & a hint of green capsicum. Full flavoured palate reflecting the nose, tropical, juicy lemon / lime acidity, a slight stony minerality and most enjoyable bright crisp finish. Fresh and Delish! Delta Estate ‘River Delta’ Lighter Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Marlborough NZ
Very pale almost clear with a faint lemon hue, lighter bodied wine. Fragrant nose with sweet tropical / passion-fruit & citrus aromas & a little green herb note. Nice & fresh, concentrated off dry palate (8/8gms rs) juicy citrus acidity, green apple, gooseberry & passion-fruit flavours, slight green leaf / savoury note too. Light, fresh and very quaff-able Sauvignon Blanc. (9.5% abv)

Pask Winery Declaration Syrah 2021, Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Deep opaque black-cherry in colour to the rim, medium bodied. In the nose there are aromas of red berries, raspberry, black currant, black pepper and spices. Wonderful on the palate with bright red & dark fruit flavours, peppery & spicy with fine powdery tannins, smoky / nutty oak, & a refreshing acid backbone all beautifully integrated. Pask ‘Small Batch’ Gimblett Gravels Viognier 2020, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Bright, shiny pale yellow / gold in colour, slight oily viscosity. Aromatic nose with fresh florals then sweet apricot, red apple & barrel spices follow. A medium bodied, unctuous creamy palate has ripe apricot fruit flavours with a little tart acidity, velvety leesy textures & subtle spice influence all in harmony. Long zesty & refreshing finish. Semi transparent dark cherry red in colour, medium bodied. Intense black & red berry fruit aromas in the nose, warm baking spice and savoury earth notes. Concentrated mouth-filling palate, dark fruit, damson plum, cherry, spice, lovely velvety tannins & racy acidity all adding texture & character, a little peppery note on the finish. Soft salmon pink in colour, copper hues. Floral noes with immediate notes of strawberries & cream, red berries / red currants and a hint of spice. French Peak Chardonnay 2023, Banks Peninsula, North Canterbury NZ
Shiny medium gold in colour, medium bodied, nice legs / tears too. In the nose, ripe stone-fruit, nectarine, pineapple & a hint of vanilla. A fruit forward palate reflecting the nose with a lovely acid drive, slightly creamy supporting bright stone-fruit, tropical fruit & grapefruit citrus flavours. Mid straw – gold in color, light oily viscosity -Fragrant, floral nose with aromas of honeysuckle baked pears & warming spices. Medium bodied wine, with flavours of red apples, juicy pears, baking spice on the palate – lively, slightly tart acidity & subtle gritty ‘pear skin’ wet-stone textures. Bright mid-orange in colour with copper hues, medium bodied, some fine solids remain. Immediate notes of ripe pears & oak spice in the nose, a hint of ginger-beer. On the palate the fruit supported by a grippy pear-skin texture & crunchy acidity all rounded out with subtle oak & a persistent dry finish. Only 11.4% too so quite quaff-able (serve lightly chilled.) Pinot Gris fermented on skins immediately pressed off to old French oak, light lees, no SO2 for 12 month before bottling with minimal sulphur. Something a wee bit different but yum tonight – Pale straw with green/gold hues, brief bead with small bubbles. The fresh fruity nose is all about the passion-fruit, with a little stone-fruit & tart citrus aromas following. The fruit forward palate reflects the nose with juicy lemon & tropical fruit flavours, a nice zesty grapefruit acidity, whet stone minerality & a refreshing spritz on the finish.
