Folding Hill ‘Cellar Release’ Pinot Noir 2014, Bendigo, Central Otago NZ
Deep cherry red – garnet in colour, showing a hint of age at the rim. The nose is subtle at first but after a good swirl in the glass, aromas of plum, cherry & dark berry, savoury, smoky, dried herb & barrel spice. On the palate, juicy stewed plums, dark cherry & red berry fruit flavours are perfectly integrated with smooth tannins, a refreshing acid backbone & smoky, spicy oak – complex, textured, & elegant wine with a long, off dry & very generous finish. Folding Hill ‘Orchard Block’ Pinot Noir 2020, Bendigo, Central Otago NZ
Dark cherry red – garnet in colour, lighter at the rim. In the nose, sweet red & dark berry fruit aromas, savoury earthy notes, dried herb, a little spice & vanilla-wine biscuit. On the palate there’s juicy blackberry, blueberry, & raspberry fruit flavours, medium bodied & textured with layers of silky tannins, bright acidity, more savoury dried herb, toasty oak spice and a long, bone dry finish.

Folding Hill Pinot Noir 2020, Bendigo, Central Otago NZ
Translucent mid ruby – cherry red in colour lighter at the rim. Aromas of ripe plums, berries & cherries in the nose, a hint of toasted oak, spice & a subtle dry herb note. Concentrated, luscious palate with juicy fruit flavours reflecting the nose, enveloped in silky tannins, medium acidity, savoury / herbs & nicely integrated spicy oak. Long textured & fruity finish. Bright yellow-gold in colour, slight oily viscosity. Fragrant nose with aromas of ripe peach, green apple & lemon citrus, then vanilla oak notes. Has a beautifully textured palate / mouthfeel, with subtle oak, fine tannins, a fresh citrus acidity, juicy stone-fruit & crisp apple flavours. Long complex & most satisfying finish. Bright & shiny deep golden-yellow in colour, great legs / oily viscosity. Very aromatic nose with ripe stone-fruit, nutty oak & warm spice notes. On the palate, medium bodied with flavours of ripe peaches & nectarines, a juicy lemon citrus acidity, subtle nutty spiced oak influence, it’s complex & nicely textured with a persistent long dry finish. Deep cherry / garnet red in colour, lighter at the rim. Aromas of ripe plums & raspberries, savoury, earth, warm spices & white pepper on the nose. A complex layered palate with plum & berry fruit flavours, savoury & mineral elements, underpinned with powdery tannins, fresh acidity & subtle oak. A long dry spicy finish with grip. Hand selected grapes, “foot stomped” & natural barrel ferment / aging.

The Elder Pinot, Pinot Noir 2019, Martinborough NZ
Dark cherry red in colour just starting to show a little brick at the rim, ample bodied wine. Intense, fragrant nose of cherry & dark berry aromas, choccy, espresso & spice notes, savoury earth. Succulent, concentrated palate with cherry, plum & dark berry fruit flavours under-pinned with silky tannins & medium acidity, savoury earth & baking spice, warmth from 14% ABV. A long memorable full-flavoured finish. 4 x Pinot Noir clones, 10 months on lees in French oak, 3 – 4 years in bottle before release. The Elder Pinot Pinot Gris 2022, Martinborough NZ
Bright mid-golden in colour with lovely oily viscosity / legs. The nose is fragrant & floral with aromas of sweet pear, white peach fruit then notes of spice / ginger. The palate follows with ripe pear, stone-fruit & spice flavours, a rich creamy & textural mouth feel, with subtle lees / oak influence, medium acidity, all nicely in balance. Long off-dry finish. The Elder Pinot Pinot Rosé 2022, Martinborough NZ
Pretty salmon pink in colour with pale copper hues. In the nose, aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, a little oak spice & a whiff of smoker lollies. The palate is nicely weighted with juicy red berry & cherry fruit flavours, a hint of strawberries & cream, warm spices. Beautifully textured with a crisp acidity & silky tannins, a slight minerality too, then a long off-dry, really persistent finish with a little pepper bite. Excellent! Dijon Clone 115 & 667 Pinot Noir from the Hanson Lane Vineyard was hand harvested, pressed gently, cool fermented in s/s tank then 4 months barrel-aging on lees. Ruby / cherry red in colour, semi-translucent medium bodied wine. Fragrant & floral nose with aromas of blackberries, ripe plums, dark cherry & spice. Nicely integrated palate with fine velvety tannins, softer acidity, raspberry & blackberry flavours are underpinned with a savoury earthy note. Well balanced & nicely textured wine. Long elegant finish. Fruit from the Three Miners vineyard in Alexandra, open top ferment, on skins for 4 days, pressed & matured in French oak. Excellent value for a Central Pinot too. RRP:$41.00

Rex Pickett’s Sideways Reserve, Home Estate Pinot Noir, 2020 Wairarapa NZ
Mid garnet / ruby red in colour, slightly opaque, medium bodied wine. A floral, sweet & savoury nose with aromas of ripe plums, dark berries then savoury herb / earth notes and oak spice. Luxurious palate has layers of texture & complexity. Dark berry & plum fruit, then savoury herb & black olive flavours, fine tannins & a ripe juicy acidity. Concentrated, long full flavoured finish. Excellent Wairarapa Pinot. Individual batches of grapes processed & fermented separately, 21 days on skins, 12 months in Oak before blending. My favorite of the 3 Pinots.

Deep garnet to back cherry in colour, medium bodied wine. Ripe cherry, dark berry fruit aromas initially, subtle spiced oak then savoury garden herb notes. Richly textured palate of sweet dark fruit – blackberry, black doris plum, cherry, nicely integrated silky tannins & fine acidity, savoury herb, fine oak spice, long dry finish, very moreish. Rex Pickett’s Sideways Pinot Noir Rosé 2021, Central Otago NZ
Mid salmon pink in colour with pale copper hues, medium bodied. Fresh enticing nose with ‘strawberries and cream’ aromas, then bright raspberry & spice notes. The mid-weighted palate is all about the red summer berries, a crisp acidity and nicely textured, creamy mouthfeel – finishes long & just off-dry. Juicy & Crisp. Shiny light golden in colour with yellow hues, medium legs / viscosity / body. Aromas of ripe peaches, nectarine, apricot, warm spice & nutty oak in the nose. Bright, fruit-forward palate with a gentle grapefruit acidity, lush stone-fruit & nougat flavours, a creamy & textured wine with subtle nutty spice / oak influence. Long juicy finish. Rex Pickett’s Sideways Wines Pinot Gris 2019, Central Otago NZ
Pale straw in colour with subtle green hues. Lovely floral & fragrant nose of crunchy pip fruit, pears & apples, sweet peaches, then orange / tangelo citrus notes. On the palate it’s medium weighted, creamy mouthfeel, with fruit flavours reflecting the nose, crisp apple, pear, sweet stone-fruit & yeasty, brioche & spice notes. Graham Norton GN Sauvignon Blanc 2023
Interesting wine, a blend of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 88%, Hawke’s Bay Pinot Gris 8% and Gisborne Chardonnay 4%.
Pale straw in colour with subtle green hues. The nose has aromas of pip fruit, red apple, ripe pear, and a little tropical fruit, pineapple & guava. On the palate a soft, medium-sweet, fruit-driven palate, pip & stone-fruit flavours persist, a gentle acidity / textural grip & a medium off-dry finish. Not your usual zingy Marlborough savvy but a quite delicious, very drinkable & great value wine.

Deep purple / black cherry in colour to the rim, ample bodied wine with nice legs too! Enticing bouquet with dark & red fruit aromas, blackcurrant, ripe black-doris plum & sweet spices. The palate is soft and supple, smooth & finely textured. Fruit flavours reflecting the palate are intertwined with fine silky tannins, a gentle acidity & subtle oak influence. Black cherry / purple in colour lighter at the rim, medium- bodied. Fragrant nose of cherry, plum, dark berry, a savoury herb note & vanilla oak. Lovely concentrated palate with dark berry & plum fruit flavours & savoury green herb notes, a lively acid backbone & chalky tannins adding grip & texture, subtle oak and a long bone-dry finish – a taste of Spain but from Waiheke! Excellent. Clone 776 Tempranillo from the Onetangi Valley, was hand harvested, fermented in 2T fermenters, aged in 15% new American oak and remaining old American oak. Postage Stamp Wines ‘Prospect’ Waiheke Red 2021, Waiheke Island NZ
Deep black cherry / dark purple coloured to the rim, medium bodied. The nose has aromas of ripe dark berries & plums, a hint of black olives, savoury earth & spiced oak notes. The palate is very smooth, with lovely silky tannins, a fine acid line, ripe plums & black berry fruit flavours, a little savoury / leather / earth with subtle oak influence. Excellent! 40% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc & 10% Petit Verdot, all from the Onetangi Valley. Hand harvested, fermented separately in 1 or 2 T fermenters, aged in old barrels for 10 months before blending & bottling. Excellent, well priced Bordeaux style red. Bright mid straw in colour with golden hues. The nose is fresh and complex with aromas of white flowers, ripe peach, citrus, sweet apple & nutty, bready notes. Cuvar Winery Guardians, Rivermere Vineyard Chardonnay 2021, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Mid golden coloured with pale green hues, medium plus bodied, oily viscosity. Wonderful nose of smokey oak, peaches, green apple, citrus, spice & butterscotch. The palate is juicy with lush stone-fruit flavours, a zesty citrus acidity, creamy malo & nutty oak influenece, nicely balanced wine with depth and length. Pretty pale salmon in colour, light viscosity. Immediate strawberries & cream aromas in the nose with a slight peppery spice note to follow. Refreshing tart raspberry & sweet strawberry fruit flavours on the palate, with a crisp acidity and juicy berry-fruit sweetness, nicely textured with an off dry finish. Serve slightly chilled for a delicious autumn evening sip – smoked salmon on a cracker – Yum!

Deep black cherry / garnet in colour to the rim, medium bodied. The nose has aromas of dark berries, juicy ripe plums, warm spices & smokey oak notes. Deep cherry – red garnet in colour, translucent, medium bodied. In the nose, raspberry, cherry & plum fruit aromas are followed by subtle chocolate & oak spice notes. Mid lemon / gold in colour medium bodied, Light viscosity. In the nose, aromas of stone-fruit, apple & a grapefruit, nice yeasty lees / barrel spice too. Well rounded palate with a fine line of citrus acidity, lush fruit flavours reflecting the palate & layers of texture and complexity. Bright mid-orange in colour with copper hues, medium bodied, some fine solids remain. Immediate notes of ripe pears & oak spice in the nose, a hint of ginger-beer. On the palate the fruit supported by a grippy pear-skin texture & crunchy acidity all rounded out with subtle oak & a persistent dry finish. Only 11.4% too so quite quaff-able (serve lightly chilled.) Pinot Gris fermented on skins immediately pressed off to old French oak, light lees, no SO2 for 12 month before bottling with minimal sulphur. Medium cherry to ruby red in colour, translucent but a slight haze in the glass. The nose is concentrated & bright with red & dark berry / cherry fruit aromas, a subtle savoury earth / forest floor note too. Vibrant fruit-driven palate reflecting the nose, a zesty acid backbone & chalky tannins provide grip & texture, lighter bodied but with a long dry slightly peppery finish. Made from 93% Pinot Noir (6 different clones) plus 7% Syrah from Cirrus Estate & Cambridge Road vineyards. Indigenous yeasts, full malo, partial carbonic fermentation then 11 months on lees in Stainless with the occasional cap punch down, unfined / unfiltered. No oak was used during production. Darker red cherry in colour, lighter at the rim, semi opaque lighter bodied wine. Fragrant savoury nose with aromas of tomato stalk, ripe dark cherry, white pepper & a whiff of smoke? Lighter weight, crisp & juicy palate with flavours of dark cherries & berries, a hint of green tomato, a crunchy tart acidity, light grippy tannins & subtle oak influence adding texture & interest. Very different but tasty wine. Grapes from 3 Millton vineyards, Syrah 65% & Malbec 35% had indigenous carbonic ferments, full malo, 8 months on lees in a mix of french oak, unfined & unfiltered on bottling. Mid yellow gold in colour, slight orange hue with a slight haziness, medium viscosity. Fascinating nose of sweet grapes, (almost dessert wine like) then mandarin / tangelo citrus & green apple aromas, notes of spice & yeast. Bright orange citrus & apple fruit flavours on the palate, softer than expected acidity – little spritz, nicely integrated with subtle oak spice & full malo / lees treatment adding a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Juicy, delicious & most interesting, long finish! Medium lemon – gold in colour, lighter bodied wine. The nose is a little smoky with a hint of dried herb at first then fresh tropical & lemon rind fruit aromas follow. On the palate juicy lemon pith & green apple flavours, a crunchy acidity & salty notes balanced by a rich creamy / leesy mouthfeel. Lake Chalice ‘Plume’ Chardonnay 2020, Marlborough NZ
Mid straw in colour with golden hues, ample bodied wine. Immediate waft of flint, gun-smoke on the nose then butterscotch, caramel popcorn, toasted nuts & spicy oak… Nice citrus acidity, ripe peach & nectarine fruit flavours, rounded out with layers of complexity from whole bunch, wild ferment, oak, lees and full malo treatment. This is a ‘big’ full flavoured weighty chardonnay, not for the ABC folk. I love this style – Excellent! Pale Salmon pink in colour with a slight oily viscosity. Bright florals then raspberry & strawberry aromas on the nose with a wee hint of spice. Flavours of peach, juicy red berries & melon on the palate, a crisp acidity & fine tannins, a pear skin textural element & spice notes adding interest. Long dry, nicely balanced finish. Deep cherry red in colour slightly translucent, medium bodied. On the nose, savoury earthy notes at first then cherry, dark berry & toasty oak spice aromas follow.
