Honey Wine / Mead NV Golden Bay, Nelson, NZ
Some months ago I found this in my wine cupboard, long forgotten – after some sleuthing on the internet and help from Judy at Neudorf, I discovered it was made years ago by Terry Knight who now owns the Kiwi Spirit Distillery, producer of TeKiwi 100% Blue Agave Tequilana Spirit, gin, whisky, vodka & liqueurs. Thanks for the info Terry. So anyway, I’ve just opened it and shared with my brother in law who enjoys mead & ciders. Mid to deep golden in colour, a little sediment so decanted / filtered carefully, no presence of any oxidation. Lovely fresh nose of clover honey, just like opening a honey jar, hint of butterscotch. Lighter bodied with a fresh, ‘not too sweet’ honey flavour and more surprisingly, a little citrus acidity & a lovely textured mouthfeel. Long dry finish. A really enjoyable tipple still drinking well after possibly 12 years? Sorry you can’t buy this but Terry makes a honey Liqueur which you can buy online. Check his range out here: https://kiwispiritdistillery.co.nz/
