Eaton “Raupo Vineyard’ Chardonnay 2020, Marlborough NZ
My first taste of this Chardonnay from Mike Eaton & it’s excellent. Bright shiny lemon-gold in colour, medium bodied wine. The nose has aromas of ripe stone-fruit, peach, nectarine, toasty, nutty & creamy lees / malo notes. The palate is rich & textured with lush fruit flavours, a vibrant acidity, fine oak & creamy / nutty elements all in unison. Long very moreish finish. I love this style of Chardonnay – so did the fruit fly that dived in on pouring the glass – I’m still alive, sadly the fly is not, but he died happy! RRP:$62.00 https://eatonwines.nz/

Harrison Eaton ‘Melange Rougir’ 2021, Nelson / Marlborough NZ
A blush blend from Nelson & Marlborough fruit. Grunerveltliner 43% (Nelson) Pinot Noir 15%, Sauvignon Blanc 24%, Gewurztraminer 13% & Pinot Gris 5% – Bright raspberry red in colour – clear & clean, medium bodied. A wiffy savoury nose (mercaptans in the PN says Harrison) to start but after a bit of swirling it blows off & the red berries & herbal notes start to come through. Fresh flavours of red berries, citrus, spice, a crisp acidity, flinty minerality & saltiness, fine tannins & oak influence – lovely grippy textured mouthfeel & a long fruity but dry finish. Really interesting & thoroughly enjoyable experience trying Harrison’s wines. I recommend trying them at least once, if not each year, as his winemaking approach is better each vintage. Only 472 Bottles produced RRP:$32.00

Harrison Eaton ‘Melange du Champ’ 2021, Marlborough NZ
Pretty pale apricot / orange in colour with the faintest haziness. The nose is fragrant with spice & Turkish delight aromas predominant, orange, citrus & pear notes follow. The palate is beautifully integrated, with flavours mirroring the nose, a zippy acidity, it’s textured & complex & very drinkable. Hand harvested, co-fermented Gewurztraminer 64% Pinot Gris 27% & Sauvignon Blanc 9%, pigeage basket pressed into seasoned French oak, with lees stirring 2-3 time over 6 months. Settling in s/s tanks before bottling unfined & unfiltered. Both Glenys and I really enjoyed this new vintage – I think Harrison might be on to something with this release. One of the nicest natural wines I’ve tasted. only 566 bottles produced! RRP:$32.00

Harrison Eaton ‘Melange Blanc’ Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Marlborough NZ
Medium lemon-gold coloured wine, a very faint haze, a few solids in suspension, light viscosity. The wine has a quite different savvy nose with capsicum & green herb, mandarin & grapefruit aromas. The palate has more tart grapefruit & mandarin flavours, a juicy lime-citrus acidity, stony minerality, a slight creaminess & a dry finish. Harrison has an unusual but interesting approach to his wines using what he terms ‘ancient methods’ unfined, unfiltered, minimum SO2 etc. Really Interesting wines. RRP:$32.00

Koerner ‘The Clare’ 20, 2020 Clare Valley AUS
Deep cherry red in colour, lighter at the rim – tiniest bubbles almost like a wee ferment going on & a slight haze from being unfiltered & un-fined. The nose is a complex amalgam of all sorts of dark berry fruit, spices & smokey oak notes. On the palate the berry & plum flavours continue with soft powdery tannins & medium acidity. Beautifully textured wine, not just your average ‘Red Blend” I was pleasantly surprised how this is NOT a big brash Aussie red as I sort of expected looking at the varieties – the website description sums it up perfectly “Bordeaux varieties made in a Loire style – vibrant, bright fruits & soft tannins” Wonderful! 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 12% Malbec, 12% Grenache, 9% Carignan & 1% Sciacarello RRP:NZ $49.00 Available from Vintners

Dancing Water ‘Georgie’ Scheurebe 2021, Waipara NZ.
Almost completely clear in the glass, the nose is fragrant & floral with lemon, lime aromas & a savoury spice note. An off dry style with flavours of stone-fruit, lemon zest & baking spices, crisp acid backbone, nicely textured with a slight creamy mouthfeel. Great length and complexity on the finish. This wine is made from perhaps the only plantings of the Scheurebe (pronounced shoi-ray-ba) grape variety in New Zealand. The only other time I have tasted this was the Dancing Water ‘Tier Garden’ Waipara Scheurebe 2010 at a New Brighton Wine Club tasting in 2012 – Highly recommend that you get a bottle or two as this is a very rare wee gem of a wine.
