As a provenance grower-led society dedicated to the art of traditional sparkling wine production, Méthode Marlborough meticulously adheres to the time-honoured process of secondary fermentation in the bottle, followed by the intricate riddling and disgorging process, the same process through which Champagne is made. Each step is a labour of love, ensuring that nothing is rushed in the pursuit of perfection. Amidst the sun-drenched beauty of Marlborough’s summer, the stage was set for an extraordinary vintage in 2024

This year, the Méthode harvest arrived earlier than usual, with handpicking commencing on many vineyards as early as mid-February. “The 2024 growing year promises to be exceptional, particularly for Méthode Marlborough varietals,” enthuses Stewart Maclennan, Senior Winemaker at Saint Clair. “We may have even broken records for the earliest pick in Marlborough this year.”

With minimal disease pressure and optimal growing conditions, the 2024 harvest is poised to yield wines of unparalleled quality, boasting vibrant fruit flavours and impeccable balance. “Our dry-farmed ‘Maybern Vineyard’ in Koromiko, sheltered from the wind and blessed with steep slopes, has witnessed early and even ripening, thanks to ample sun exposure in this dry season,” shares Edel Everling of Johanneshof Cellars, reflecting the excitement rippling through the region’s viticulture and winemaking teams.

For Mel Skinner, Chair of Méthode Marlborough and owner of Esses Estate, the 2024 season marks a culmination of tireless dedication and passionate advocacy. “After weathering storms and floods in previous years, the 2024 vintage fills us with boundless enthusiasm,” says Skinner.

“Vintage aside, Méthode Marlborough has had an extremely busy year hosting Oz Clarke OBE, Emma Jenkins MW, Gerhard Eichelmann and working closely with Wine Marlborough, flying the flag of the exceptional quality of Méthode produced in our province,” she says.

Embracing a commitment to education, Méthode Marlborough has led the charge in sharing their expertise through enlightening masterclasses for aspiring winemakers and consumers alike. “Our team’s passion for sparkling wine knows no bounds, and we’re thrilled to impart that enthusiasm through educational initiatives,” Skinner affirms.

As anticipation reaches a crescendo, Stewart Maclennan issues a tantalizing invitation: “Mark your calendars now for the release of the 2024 Méthode wines in 2026. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out!”

About Méthode Marlborough

Méthode Marlborough is a collaborative group of wineries dedicated to producing world-class sparkling wine from the vast range available in New Zealand. All Méthode Marlborough wines are made in the traditional method, with the second fermentation occurring in the bottle, followed by meticulous riddling and disgorging processes. This produces wines with a fine and persistent bead.

Additionally, all these wines are aged for a minimum of 18 months before disgorging, allowing for the development of complex flavours that balance fresh and fruit-driven character with savoury notes of toast and brioche. Méthode Marlborough is dedicated to making and promoting wines made from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier, internationally recognized as a benchmark style by sparkling wine
producers around the world.
