Gold medals for two 2013 Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noirs

Mud House has been awarded two gold medals for their two 2013 Central Otago Pinot Noirs, at The New Zealand International Wine Show (NZIWS). The 2013 Mud House Single Vineyard Claim 431 Central Otago Pinot Noir and the 2013 Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noir both received gold at the prestigious national awards.

Last year the 2012 Mud House Central Otago Pinot Noir won the Trophy for Best Commercial Red Wine at the NZIWS after receiving a gold medal at the 2013 show.

Mud House Group Winemaker, Ben Glover is ecstatic with the results. “The Pinot Noir from our 11 year old, Claim 431 Vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago, is definitely carving out a name for itself. The 2013 vintage follows on from our fabulous 2012 Pinot Noir successes”, Ben said.

“Bendigo is an ideal home for producing world class Pinot Noir. I feel the combination of this vineyard site, along with the attention to detail provided by Stephen Dempster and his viticultural team to produce incredible fruit, is the key to the gorgeous consistency of wine that is produced”, Ben said.

The 2013 vintage was a winner, starting with little tickle of frost, followed by warm but not excessively hot temperatures. There was a fantastic balance between canopy growth and fruit loading. Harvest began a little later than usual on the 5th of April. Typically, harvest at Claim 431 lasts for two weeks; however the 2013 vintage was slightly longer with the final block harvested 3 weeks later.  Typical dark fruit, plum and dried herb flavours were evident in the fruit as it ripened and berries maintained good integrity.

2013 was Group Winemaker; Ben Glover’s first vintage with Mud House and his hands off style of winemaking is evident. The result is a feminine style of Pinot Noir with tannin and acid balance showing line, impressive persistence and mouth feel, which is beginning to turn heads.
