DECEMBER

Villa Maria ‘Cellar Selection’ Merlot 2018, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Deep purple with violet hues. Fragrant nose of dark berries, plum and blackcurrant leaf aromas. Layered palate with concentrated black berry-fruit and plum flavours, grippy tannin / oak textures, and a long warming finish. Very drinkable even on a summer’s eve. Saint Clair ‘James Sinclair’ Chardonnay 2018 Marlborough NZ
Gorgeous lemon-gold in colour, fragrant nose of fresh baked bread, tropical fruit and oak spice – Barrel ferment, malo and lees influence quite evident on the palate – weighty, creamy and vibrant fruit flavours, well balanced and integrated, layers of complexity – love to see in 3 or 4 years. Eaton Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2018 – Awatere – Flaxbourne, Marlborough NZ
Pungent & powerful – full blown oaked savvy in a chardonnay style. Bright lemon gold in colour with a rich nose of stonefruit, fine oak, baked bread and vanilla notes. Fabulously complex palate with lots going on. Great weight / mouthfeel with ripe tart grapefruit flavours, richly textured, nutty, spicy, beautifully integrated with a long dry but full flavoured finish – This is my favourite wine of the year so far! Te Awa ‘Left Field’ Albarino 2018 Gisborne NZ
Bright lemon gold in colour, fresh floral nose of citrus and stonefruit lead into a succulenty palate of ripe peach, nectarine and a hint of spicyness. Lovely textured wine with crisp acidity and a long limey finish. RRP:$18.00 https://teawacollection.com/

Matahiwi Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Wairarapa NZ
Very pale straw coloured. Gorgeous aromatic nose of tart citrus and fresh cut grass. Gooseberry, passionfruit and ripe limes on the palate – very fruit driven, crisp, clean intense flavours, with a zesty, mouthwatering finish. Mélange Sauvignon Blanc 2019 Marlborough NZ
First Natural wine from Harrison Eaton – Hazey golden lemon coloured with slightly oily viscosity. Very shy nose at first with grapefruit and stonefruit coming through as it opens up. Lovely balanced palate with grapefruit pith and lime acidity, creamy textured mouth-feel and a very long juicy, slightly tart finish – Great stuff! Wild ferment, 75% tank ferment, 25% barrel fermented, full malolactic fermentation in both tank & barrel portions. About 4-6hrs on skins prior to whole bunch manual basket press. Unfined & unfiltered, no additives. Small amount of sulphur added prior to bottling. RRP: $30.00

Spade Oak ‘Voysey’ Rosé – Tempranillo 2019, Gisborne NZ
Pale watermelon / copper pink in colour. Sweet red berries & confectionary on the nose. Medium bodied with bright raspberry / red currant flavours on the palate, creamy mouthfeel, spritzy acidity and texture, long off dry finish. Lovely summer sipping with a Mediterranean style platter. Gisborne Savvy! Very pale straw in colour with a hint of pale green – Immediately there’s green tomato stalk & stonefruit / tropical fruit aromas in the nose. Spade Oak ‘Voysey’ Pinot Gris 2019, Gisborne NZ
Slightly oily viscosity with a light golden / onion skin colour. Fragrant floral nose with spice, apple and peach notes. Punchy acidity with sweet pear, apple and stonefruit flavours on the palate, nicely textured and a long, spicy dry finish. Very tasty and great value. RRP:$19.00

Madam Sass Pinot Noir Rosé 2019, Central Otago NZ
Shiny salmon pink in colour. Lovely summer berry nose with a hint of confectionary, smoker lollies? Juicy fruit-forward wine with raspberry, strawberry flavours and spice on the palate. Nice crunchy acidity / textural elements end in a long tasty finish.RRP: $25.00

Summerhouse Pinot Gris 2019, Blind River, Marlborough NZ
Soft lemon gold with hint of onion skin in colour. Immediate waft of spice and fresh pears in the nose with a hint of nectarine. Summerhouse Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Marlborough NZ
Light straw coloured with a pale green tinge. Vibrant nose of tropical & citrus fruit with a green herb / tomato stalk note. Summerhouse Chardonnay 2018, Marlborough NZ
Bright lemon gold in colour. Ripe stonefruit & tropical fruit aromas in the nose with just a hint of oak. Mouth-filling palate of ripe apricot & nectarine flavours, fresh lemony citrus acidity, richly textured with a long juicy finish. A lovely lightly oaked chardy for summer seafood matching. Mount Michael ‘The Mountaineer’ Pinot Noir 2017, Central Otago NZ
Deep cherry red medium bodied wine – vibrant fresh herbal nose with spiced plum & cherry fruit aromas. Copper / pink in colour. Lighter bodied. The nose is bursting with summer strawberry and raspberry notes. Giesen Wines “The Sister’s Land” Riesling Blush – 2019, Marlborough NZ
Riesling with a splash of Syrah – Shiny pale watermelon coloured with a floral nose of summer berries, lemons and tangelos. Giesen ‘Gemstone’ Riesling 2018, Marlborough NZ
Three parcels of Riesling fermented in Granite tanks, French oak barrels & stainless steel, rested on lees, blended then bottled. Pale lemon gold in colour, fragrant floral nose with citrus notes – juicy layered palate of concentrated lemon & lime fruit, subtle mineral / textured mouthfeel, crisp acidity and a long yummy finish. Giesen Estate Riesling 2019, Marlborough / Waipara Fruit, NZ
Shiny pale straw in colour, pale green hints. Flinty green notes, stonefruit and limes in the nose. Slightly sweeter than the 16/18 wines, with green apple, tangelo and limey citrus flavours on the palate… softer acidity, lower abv, nice dry finish. Giesen Estate Riesling 2018, Marlborough / Waipara fruit, NZ
Bright straw to lemon in colour. Medium viscosity. Intense nose of ripe citrus, mandarin & some spice. Again medium sweet on the palate with a bit more fruit concentration than the ’16, higher acidity / abv give the wine more punch, depth and grip. Long juicy finish. Gorgeous. Giesen Estate Riesling 2016, Marlborough & Waipara fruit, NZ
Always brilliant, always consistently good. Straw gold in colour, with a green tinge. Floral, nose with honey, tangelo & mandarin notes. Medium sweet palate with juicy fruit flavours and a lime citrus acidity that balances beautifully with the 40gl rs. Luscious! RRP: $17.00 https://giesen.co.nz/

Mt Beautiful Chardonnay 2017, North Canterbury NZ
Gorgeous lemon gold in colour with ripe peach & nectarine aromas and a subtle hint of nutty oak in the nose. Fruit driven palate with intense flavours of ripe stonefruit, grapefruity acidity, a little malo / creamy / textured, long juicy finish.. Wonderfully balanced and very moreish. Coxhead Creek Rosé, Cabernet-Franc 2019, Matakana NZ
The palest orange / pink in colour, lighter bodied wine. Interesting nose of red berries and flinty notes. Fresh crisp palate with taught acidity, raspberry / citrus / apple flavours. Coxhead Creek, Verdelho 2019, Matakana NZ
Almost colourless with a green tinge. Medium bodied, oily viscosity. Savoury stoney notes & citrus blossom in the nose. Weighty palate with concentrated lime, tangello and tropical fruit flavours, nice mineral note, soft acidity and a little heat from 14.5% alc. Lawson Dry Hills “PINK” Rosé Pinot Noir 2019, Marlborough NZ
Bright candy-apple pink in colour. Gorgeous nose of summer raspberry and strawberry aromas. Nicely balanced palate with ripe, concentrated & juicy berry-fruit flavours, crisp acidity and a long dry finish. Perfect for summer platters or just by itself! RRP: $25.00 https://lawsonsdryhills.co.nz/

Summerhouse Merlot 2016, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Deep cherry red in colour, with a fragrant and fruity nose of plum, blackberry and earthy notes. Lucious plum flavours on the palate with chalky tannins, grippy acidity & subtle oak influence giving texture and length. Drinking beautifully – Gold Medal – New World Wine Awards 2019. Montana New Zealand Collection ‘Smooth & Velvety’ Pinot Noir 2018, Marlborough NZ
Translucent cherry red in colour – savoury notes with cherries & plum on the nose. Lovely textured palate of cherry & plum fruit flavours, subtle oak, silky tannins, and an earthy herbal background. Still young – will improve with a bit of age. Excellent value at this price! RRP: $20.00

Montana New Zealand Collection ‘Delicate & Fruity’ Pinot Noir Rosé 2019, Marlborough NZ
Shiny pink in colour with copper hues – on the nose there’s red summer berry aromas and a hint of spice. Fresh and juicy raspberry & strawberry flavours on the palate with a slightly tart acidity and a nicely textured finish. Super Summer Quaffer RRP:$20.00

Montana New Zealand Collection ‘Big & Buttery’ Chardonnay 2018, Gisborne NZ
Deep golden coloured, medium bodied wine with aromas of ripe stonefruit, apricot and butterscotch on the nose. A textured wine with apricot / stonefruit flavours, tart grapefruity acidity, subtle fine oak and a long juicy finish. Not as big and buttery as I expected but still great value Gizzy chardonnay under RRP: $20.00

Montana New Zealand Collection – “Crisp & Zingy” Sauvgnon Blanc 2019, Marlborough NZ
Bright clear pale straw with a green tinge. A vibrant grassy herbaceous nose with lemon & lime aromas. The palate is nicely textured, with intense tart gooseberry and citrus flavours, and a zesty acidity. It is indeed very ‘crisp’ with a long ‘zingy’ finish. 13.0% ABV RRP:$20.00

Bright straw – gold in colour, very persistent bead. Blackenbrook Gewurztraminer 2019, Nelson NZ
Pale straw straw coloured wine with nice oily viscosity, lovely floral & ginger spice notes in the nose. Richly textured palate of honeyed pear / peach fruit flavours with ginger spice & a slightly grapefruity acidity. Off dry, a little heat from 14% alc – long mouth-filling and luscious finish. Delish! Blackenbrook Pinot Gris 2019, Nelson NZ
Pale straw / onion skin in colour, lighter viscosity (legs) medium bodied wine. Sweet pear & lychee aromas with ginger spice in the nose. Luscious palate of fresh pears underpinned with spice, fresh slightly tart acidity & nicely balanced with a little residual sweetness. Nicely textured with a long long finish. Blackenbrook Pinot Blanc 2019, Nelson NZ
Straw coloured with a hint of pale onion skin. Lovely oily viscosity in the glass, nose full of juicy pear aromas & spicy notes. The palate is succulent, with stonefruit, pear & spice flavours. Eradus Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Marlborough NZ
Bright, shiny straw coloured wine with a vibrant nose of ripe citrus fruit & green-stalk / herbal notes. Lovely zingy acidity with concentrated lemon & lime citrus flavours, complex texture & structure on the palate with a lingering bone dry, but mouthwatering finish. Yakutin Family Wines “Tamgaly Series” Cabernet Franc 2018. Matakana NZ
Cherry red / ruby coloured, lighter at the rim. Medium bodied wine with a nose of plums, red berries & a hint of musk / earthiness. Lovely integrated palate with dark berry flavours, a little green leaf & black pepper notes, nicely balanced wine with integrated velvety tannins, gentle acidity & fine toasty oak. Dry persistant finish. Third wine from Oleg Yakutin’s first release – all of very high quality and beautifully made. Cheers! 12.5% ABV RRP: $28.00

Yakutin Family Wines ‘Tamgaly Series’ Malbec 2018, Matakana NZ
Bright cherry red to purple in colour, ample bodied wine. Lots of cherries, dark berries & savoury / leather notes in the nose. The palate is juicy & fruit driven with intense dark berry & ripe plum flavours, integrated fresh acidity & fine chalky tannins. Really long mouth watering “front of mouth” finish. Still so young but damn delicious already. ABV RRP: $28.00

Yakutin Family wines… Tamgaly Series Chardonnay 2018, Matakana
Bright straw gold in colour, medium weight / viscosity. Rich oppulent nose of ripe stone-fruit, butterscotch & subtle nutty oak. A lush palate of ripe peach & nectarine flavours, soft lemon / lime acidity, creamy, nutty with subtle oak influence. Long juicy finish, beautifully balanced / textured wine even at just 1 year old. Mills Reef Reserve Rosé 2019, Hawke’s Bay NZ
A blend of “various” grape varieties from throughout the Hawke’s Bay. Lightly oily viscosity, medium salmon pink in colour with a fragrant nose of fresh summer red berries & spicy notes. Medium bodied, crisp acidity & although bone dry there’s a ripe berry-flavoured sweetness on the palate which lasts for ages. Serve slightly chilled. Lovely refreshing Spring / Summer sip! Mills Reef Winery, Reserve Chardonnay 2018 – Hawke’s Bay NZ
Made from 4 separate parcels of grapes from selected vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay region – Bright lemon / gold in colour, medium bodied. The nose shows hints of butterscotch, ripe stonefruit, subtle oak and spice. On the palate there’s more juicy stonefruit, a nice creamy mouth feel from partial malo, and fine acidity & structure, with a medium finish. Spade Oak Vineyard “Vine Street” Sparkling Rosè Fruit Wine – Gisborne NZ
Deep copper-pink in colour, not as effervescent as the white, a blend of Spade Oak Tempranillo rosé & fruit juice. Very easy to drink, soft acidity, medium sweetness and lovely berry flavours – again this is a great “summer picnic” spritzer and at about $4.00 a bottle makes it very quaffable. Spade Oak Vineyard “Vine Street” Sparkling White Fruit Wine, Gisborne NZ
Nice sparkle, pale lemon in colour. Fresh pleasant palate with a blend of muscat grape and fruit juice flavours, soft acidity, slightly sweet but not overly, most refreshing spritzer and very drinkable – 4% ABV so a great summer sipper. Jacobs Creek “Barossa Signature” Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, Barossa AUS
Deep indigo almost black in colour. The nose is full of rich dark berry aromas, earth and chocolate – Well structured palate with ripe dark berries, chocolate & savoury earthy flavours, wonderful fine tannins, with a long warm finish. RRP:$19.00

Waipara Hills Pinot Noir Rosé 2019, North Canterbury NZ
Lighter bodied wine, shiny watermelon pink coloured with pale copper highlights. Ripe raspberry & strawberry aromas on the nose. Refreshing juicy acidity & creamy palate of summer berry & toffee apple flavours lead into a nice long dry mouth-filling finish – Smoked salmon on crackers on the deck at sunset kind of wine! Trinity Hill ‘Lost Garden’ Syrah / Pinot Noir Rosé 2019, Hawke’s Bay, NZ
Second vintage of this wine tasted. Medium salmon pink in colour with lots of summer strawberry & raspberry notes on the nose with a whiff of spice. The palate is lovely and balanced with juicy fresh berry & tropical fruit flavours, a crisp limey acidity and a long dry finish. An amazing Methode Traditionelle from Daniel & Adele Le Brun – Made from hand picked and whole bunch pressed grapes (80% Chardonnay & 20% Pinot Noir.) Soft pale lemon in colour with a very tiny persistant bead. Beautiful floral nose of peach & lemon citrus, underpinned with brioche / yeasty aromas. Bone dry fruit-driven palate with nectarine, peach & citrus flavours, crisp acidity, creaminess mouthfeel, and a long intense dry finish! Just stunning. Thank you so much! Perfect!

Hunters Wines “Offshoot” Sauvignon Blanc Pet-Nat 2019, Marlborough NZ
Cloudy sparkling Pet Nat – creamy opaque pale lemon coloured wine with good amount of sediment. Stored upright and served chilled. Vigorous bubbles on opening – disipate quickly though. Distinctly sauvignon nose with yeasty & citrus aromas. Fizzy citrus acidity on the palate, nicely textured with a juicy finish. Hunters Wines “Offshoot” Chardonnay 2017 Marlborough NZ
Clear lemon gold in colour, with a nose of toasted nuts, freshly baked bread & stone-fruit / apricot aromas. Rich and weighty palate with lots of stone-fruit, juicy lemon citrus and nicely integrated oak. Textured, full flavoured & went perfectly with oven-baked deep-sea cod with lemon butter. George Wyndham “I Am George” Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 Barossa AUS
Deep cherry / purple coloured to the rim. Leafy, herbaceous nose with black currant & spice notes present. Full bodied wine with layers of dark fruit, cassis, smoky oak spice & powdery tannins on the palate. Lovely finish with concentrated fruit & just a hint of green stalk. Giesen Estate Riesling Blush 2016, Marlborough NZ
Riesling with a dash of Syrah? Why not! Pale salmon coloured wine, a sweet floral nose with raspberry & citrus notes. Medium dry with classic riesling flavours on the palate, lemon & lime citrus, green apple & a honey, then a hint of spice & red berries. Quite refreshing acidity. Juicy moreish finish! Lovely! Giesen Rosé Pinot Noir 2017, Lifestyle Range, Marlborough NZ
Deep watermelon / almost orange in colour, summery nose with lots of raspberry & strawberry aromas. Fresh crisp palate with more bright summer berries, a hint of spice and a refreshing acidity that gets the juices flowing – should have kept this until summer, but I will certainly buy at under $20 a bottle. https://giesen.co.nz/

Tohu Whenua -Awa – Awatere Valley Chardonnay 2017 Marlborough NZ
Bright straw gold in colour, med bodied. Immediately get a flinty smokey nose, underpinned with fragrant stonefruit, & grapefruit. Palate’s full of toasty / yeasty characters (lees & malo ferment) with peach, nectarine & pineapple flavours. Creamy, complex & voluptous. Tohu Whenua – Matua – Upper Moutere Chardonnay 2017 Nelson NZ
Medium bodied / viscosity, bright lemon – gold in colour. Juicy peaches, nectarine, citrus oil & gun smoke in the nose. Light but creamy – malo mouth-feel with ripe stonefruit, cashew nuts, a lemony acidity, fine oak texture & a slightly tart, dry finish. Drinking beautifully but still young. Tohu Whenua Awa – Awatere Valley Pinot Noir 2017, Marlborough NZ
Medium bodied, unfined and unfiltered Pinot Noir – dark opaque cherry purple in colour. Dark cherry & berry fruit aromas in the nose with savoury oak. Rich palate of plum, blackberries & cherry flavours, fine chalky tannins, soft integrated acidity, beautifully structured with a long complex & harmonious finish. Fabulous! 13.0% ABV RRP: $42.00

Tohu Whenua – Matua – Upper Moutere Pinot Noir 2017, Nelson NZ
Lighter bodied wine, bright translucent ruby red in colour. Dark cherry & berry aromas on the nose with a subtle hint of smoky oak.
