Tohu Wines Releases A Refreshed Single Vineyard Collection

Tohu Wines has revealed their refreshed Single Vineyard Collection at the Australia New Zealand Trade Tasting 2026.

Tohu Wines, the world’s first Maori-owned winery, introduced a refined Single Vineyard Collection at the Australia New Zealand London Trade Tasting 2026, marking the next phase in the winery’s long-standing commitment to the Upper Awatere Valley, Marlborough.

The collection – Tohu Marewa Sauvignon Blanc 2024, Tohu Matangi Chardonnay 2024, and Tohu One Pinot Noir 2023 – is sourced exclusively from Whenua Awa Vineyard, a site Tohu planted in 2002 and has worked with continuously, building a deep understanding of its potential.

“Whenua Awa has shaped us as much as we’ve shaped it,” says Bruce Taylor, Chief Winemaker. “This collection reflects our relationship with the land – the experience we’ve gained over time and our commitment to producing premium, site specific wines that speak clearly of the Upper Awatere.”

A Collection Shaped By Long-term Learning

Through long-term work at Whenua Awa, Tohu has developed an intimate understanding of how the vineyard behaves: how wind shapes canopies, how cool nights build tension, how elevation influences ripening, and how the vineyard’s mineral-rich soils drive structure and clarity.

This accumulated knowledge informs every decision made today in the vineyard and winery, resulting in wines that represent the best of what the Upper Awatere can offer.

“Whenua Awa is an exposed, high-altitude site – and we’ve learned how to work with those challenging conditions rather than against them,” says Bruce Taylor, Chief Winemaker. “This collection reflects the precision and confidence in these wines that only comes with time.”

An Evolution Of Single-vineyard Wines From Tohu

The Single Vineyard Collection builds on earlier site-driven wines from Tohu and introduces a refined identity that brings greater clarity to how place, practice, and values come together.

Viticulturally, the range highlights the defining elements of Whenua Awa – altitude, wind, climate, soils, and a long, cool growing season – with each wine shaped by close attention to how these conditions influence fruit development and character.

Marewa Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2024 reflects Whenua Awa vineyard’s elevated position, 230 metres above sea level in the Upper Awatere.

Cooler temperatures and constant airflow slow ripening, preserving acidity while building flavour and texture.

This results in a refined Sauvignon Blanc focused on structure and mineral clarity rather than overt ripeness.

Marewa in te reo Maori means to rise, lift up.

Matangi Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2024 is shaped by the persistent winds that move across Whenua Awa vineyard.

The exposed site naturally limits crop size and slows ripening, concentrating flavour while maintaining a firm line of acidity.

Matangi in te reo Maori means wind.

One Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023 takes its name from the soils that define Whenua Awa vineyard.

Derived from material carried from the Kaik?ura ranges and deposited by the braided Awatere River, these free-draining soils create a demanding growing environment that limits vigour and slows ripening.

One in te reo Maori means soil/land.

Guided by te ao Maori

The Single Vineyard Collection marks a clear evolution in how Tohu expresses its brand identity. It reflects a shift from simply showcasing place to working with a deeper understanding of it — one shaped through long-term observation, learning, and responsibility to Whenua Awa.

Te Ao Maori (the Maori world) informs the broader approach and presentation of the collection. Values such as respect for whenua and long-term responsibility as kaitiaki (guardians) shape how Tohu works with the land and how the collection is framed and shared. The visual identity was developed in collaboration with a M?ori artist and cultural advisors, drawing on elements unique to the Upper Awatere that connect the wines back to place.

This approach influences how Tohu builds and maintains relationships with land, how decisions are made over time, and how identity is carried through the wines, the naming, and the visual language of the collection. It is grounded in continuity, respect, and a long-term commitment to whenua.

The Single Vineyard Collection represents confidence earned through experience. It brings together years of insight into the land with a clearer articulation of who Tohu is today. The result is a range that is deliberate and authentic, where brand, place, and practice are aligned, and where each wine reflects a shared origin while standing confidently in its own right.
