Trophies dominated by Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir at Marlborough Wine Show

Trophies from the recent judging of the Marlborough Wine Show were announced to 150 people at a celebration dinner held in Blenheim on Saturday night. A total of 16 trophies were presented together with the Marlborough Museum Legacy Award.

The results were dominated by 2014 Sauvignon Blanc and 2012 Pinot Noir, the two classes that judges declared were the highlight of the competition.

The Marlborough Museum Legacy Award was presented to Coopers Creek for their Marlborough Riesling 2005, 2009 and 2013. Presenting the award, CEO of the Marlborough Museum, Steve Austin expressed the importance of the wine industry not only in Marlborough’s history but also in its future. Receiving the award, Coopers Creek Chief Winemaker Simon Nunns said, “The team are honoured to receive such an award and it clearly demonstrates how wonderful Riesling, and Marlborough Riesling, can be as an aged wine’. He continued, “It’s wonderful to be involved with something in the here and now and even more wonderful to be involved with something that will still be relevant for many years to come.”

The trophies were dominated by Giesen, Pernod-Ricard and Lawson’s Dry Hills, but predominantly by Villa Maria who took home trophies for Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and two for Pinot Noir. In addition, the company was also awarded the O-I Champion Wine of the Show for the Villa Maria Single Vineyard Seddon Vineyard Pinot Noir 2012.

The Marlborough Wine Show was established in 2011 to showcase the sub-regions and style diversity of wines from the province. It is owned and managed by Wine Competition Ltd, an independent company set up for the purpose of running wine competitions and associated events.
