Yealands Sauvignon Blanc Champion for Second Consecutive Year at Marlborough Wine Show

Yealands Family Wines (Yealands) have been named as the creators of New Zealand’s best Sauvignon Blanc for the second year in a row at the 2018 Marlborough Wine Show. The WineWorks Trophy for Champion Sauvignon Blanc was awarded to their 2018 Peter Yealands Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, the same honour that was awarded to the 2017 vintage in last year’s competition.

Celebrating wines made from a minimum of 95% Marlborough grapes, the 2018 Marlborough Wine Show this year awarded a total of thirty-eight gold medals across eleven varietals, with nine gold medals being awarded to Sauvignon Blanc, the second most awarded variety in the competition behind Pinot Noir. The judging panel of nine included three from outside Marlborough; Dr Jamie Goode, Matt Lamb and John Saker.

Marlborough has made a name for itself on the global stage as the spiritual home of Sauvignon Blanc, so winning the trophy for Champion Sauvignon Blanc at the Marlborough Wine Show is a special honour for any Marlborough-based winery where the award has particular relevance.

Described as vibrant and pure and a real celebration of the region, the Peter Yealands Reserve wines are the best of the Peter Yealands range. Also awarded to Yealands was a Gold Medal for their 2018 Yealands Estate Single Block S1 Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing the distinctive flavours from one particular, sun-soaked site, moderated by cool, coastal breezes, a mere 42-95 metres above sea level.

“We are thrilled to receive the Champion Sauvignon Blanc trophy for the second year in a row for our Peter Yealands Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. It’s always really special to receive recognition from any show, but when it’s alongside so many other great Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs it’s just awesome,” says Natalie Christensen, Senior Winemaker for Yealands. “The team were there to collect the trophy on the day and no doubt had a couple of Sauvs to celebrate afterwards!”

In total Yealands were awarded twenty-one medals at this year’s competition.

Peter Yealands Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is available nationwide from most major supermarkets and liquor retailers, with a recommended retail price of $18.95. Yealands Estate Single Block S1 Sauvignon Blanc is available in limited quantities from the Yealands Estate Cellar Door, www.yealandswinecellar.co.nz, with a recommended retail price of $24.95.
