Whitehaven Wines ‘Samantha’ Cuvée 2020, Marlborough NZ
Pale straw with lemon hues, frothy mousse on pouring & fine continuous bubbles. The fresh, floral nose has peaches, citrus & red apple aromas, vanilla-wine biscuit notes. Crisp palate with stone-fruit, tart apple & lemon flavours, shortbread biscuits? A lively citrus acidity is balanced with a creamy mouthfeel & texture. Long dry complex finish. Just the second release of this absolutely delicious Methode Traditionnelle. 69% Chardonnay 31% Pinot Noir, 37 months bottle-age on lees & just 2,800 bottles produced. Excellent! Whitehaven SV Wairau Valley ‘Greg’ Chardonnay 2023, Marlborough NZ
Bright shiny pale straw in colour with golden hues, medium viscosity. In the nose, ripe peach, nectarine & citrus aromas, smoky, flinty, toasty oak notes follow. The palate is vibrant with juicy stone-fruit flavours, a zesty grape-fruity citrus acidity & lovely creamy, leesy, nutty characters. Mid weighted, layers of complexity & a long dry memorable finish. Excellent. 100% Mendoza grapes from the Balvonie vineyard, hand picked, whole bunch pressed, free run juice, new/old French oak, 16 months on lees… Only 120 cases produced, celebrating Whitehaven’s 30th Year. Clear, pale rose-gold / orange coloured wine with great legs / viscosity. The nose is quite floral, with apricot & nectarine aromas & loads of spicy ‘Gewurtz’ like notes. Warming & concentrated palate with juicy pear, nectarine & peach fruit flavours, a nice zesty citrus acidity / backbone with loads of grippy pear-skin like textures. Long juicy & spicy finish. Yum! Whitehaven SV Series, ‘Block 11’ Barrel Fermented, Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Marlborough NZ
Bright straw in colour with pale yellow / golden hues, medium legs / viscosity. In the nose, luscious aromas of peach, nectarine, grapefruit & a hint of yeasty lees & nutty oak notes. Delicious medium-weighted palate has fruit flavours reflecting the nose, a creamy malo influence & grippy wet-stone textural elements. Bright, juicy & wonderfully long mouth-watering finish. Clear pale straw in colour with the faintest lemon hues. Fragrant & inviting nose of ripe tropical fruit, gooseberry, lemon & savoury, herbaceous aromas. The palate is vibrant & concentrated with tart citrus, stone-fruit & passion-fruit flavours, while crisp acidity & seashell minerality add layers of texture & complexity. Tohu Wines ‘Rewa’ Blanc De Blanc 2017, Marlborough NZ
Shiny, pale lemon in colour, a creamy mousse on pouring & a fine bead / bubbles. The nose is enticing with lemon citrus & green apple, then toasted nuts & warm-bread aromas follow. The palate has a zesty lemon-citrus acidity, juicy stone-fruit flavours & creamy lees mouthfeel, textured & complex with a long dry, concentrated finish. Gorgeous. RRP: $40.00 A delicious vintage méthode traditionelle made from 100% Chardonnay bottle-aged for 6 years, disgorged, aged a further 5 months before release. Well worth the wait!

Tohu Wines Pinot Noir Rosé 2024, Nelson / Upper Moutere NZ
Pretty pale watermelon / salmon in colour, lighter bodied. Fragrant nose with lots of red summer berries & cream aromas & a hint of candy floss / smoker lollies. The palate has a lovely balance between a fine acidity, and juicy red berry fruit flavours reflecting the palate. Quite rounded & plush in the mouth with a delicious long & refreshing finish. Tohu Wines ‘Whenua Matua’ Albarino 2020, Nelson / Upper Moutere NZ
Bright mid gold in colour with green hues, nice weight / legs. In the nose, aromas of ripe green-apples, peach, lemon citrus & subtle honeyed notes. The palate is vibrant & layered with a zesty citrus-pith acidity, a salty oyster-shell minerality, then juicy apple & stone-fruit flavours, complex, concentrated & very persistent finish, with a little hint of sweetness. Almost clear in colour with hints of green & gold, medium viscosity. In the nose it’s fragrant & floral with juicy lemon / lime citrus aromas, red apple & just a hint of honey too. Excellent weight & concentration on the palate, with ripe citrus reflecting the nose, stone-fruit & green apple flavours. It’s nicely textured with a grippy acidity & fruit sweetness on the finish. Clear bright, pale golden coloured wine, nice viscosity / legs. Aromas of juicy ripe pears, green apples & warming spice notes in the nose. The palate has a lovely pear-skin texture & a fresh acidity, juicy pear, apple & lemon citrus flavours, ginger & spice adding depth & complexity, a long, mouthwatering finish. Pale straw in colour, almost clear with subtle green hues. Very aromatic, typically Awatere nose, with zingy lemon – lime citrus & savoury green herb, capsicum, tomato stalk notes. The immediate zesty citrus acidity on the palate is fleshed out with juicy tropical fruit & tart citrus flavours, a touch of wet-stone minerality. The finish is dry, concentrated with great length. Bright yellow / gold in colour, fine, creamy mousse on pouring and tiny persistent bead. In the nose there’s fresh peach & citrus fruit aromas followed with yeasty, nutty, biscuity notes. The palate is layered & mouth-filling, a crisp, lemon citrus acid backbone is balanced by juicy, ripe stone-fruit flavours, then nutty, leesy, brioche & spice. A long, intense, complex & textured finish. This is my favourite of all Daniel’s wines – Stunning! Comprised of 91% Chardonnay & 9% Pinot Noir, this new release is limited to just 1,680 bottles, each of which have been individually hand numbered & hand labelled. Pale, almost clear in colour with a faint green tinge, tiny persistent bead. Aromas of citrus, apple & pear, a hint of yeast & vanilla biscuit in the nose. It’s light, fresh & crisp on the palate with ripe pear, apple & lemon citrus fruit flavours, a creamy mousse texture & a gentle acidity, slightly nutty, semi sweet but off-dry & a delicious mid length finish. Lighter translucent raspberry – ruby red in colour. Floral aromas at first in the nose then cherries, red berry & savoury forest floor, dried herb notes follow. Medium weighted palate with ripe cherry & red berry fruit flavours, refreshing acidity, fine tannin ‘grip’ & subtle oak adding texture & complexity. Long, concentrated & elegant finish. Bright pale straw in colour with green-gold hues. Subdued tropical fruit, gooseberry & savoury green-herb aromatics in the nose. The palate reflects the nose with tropical fruit, lime citrus & some crisp green apple flavours, a zesty acidity is softened with subtle oak & some fine mineral texture & grip. Clear pale green-gold in colour, creamy mouse on pouring, fine persistent bed. An aromatic nose of warm bread, vanilla-wine biscuits, lemon drops & ripe peaches. On the palate a lovely crisp, lemon-citrus acidity, then a rich creamy & leesy mouthfeel with sweet stone-fruit & green apple flavours, vanilla biscuits & a long dry but juicy finish. Lake Chalice ‘The Raptor’ Pinot Noir 2023, Marlborough NZ
Gorgeous deep garnet / raspberry red in colour to the rim. It’s all about red & dark berries in the nose at first, then plum, savoury herb & oak spice notes follow. A medium bodied, textured palate has ripe raspberry, boysenberry & plum fruit flavours & sweetness, with some savoury herb and chocolate notes, nicely integrated acidity, silky tannins & subtle oak end in a long dry very agreeable finish. Lake Chalice ‘Plume’ Sauvignon Blanc, 2021, Marlborough NZ
Clear mid yellow – gold in colour, with a light oily viscosity. Complex nose with aromas of citrus, stone-fruit, red apples & subtle vanilla, oak & lees / yeasty notes. The palate is creamy & layered with fruit flavours reflecting the nose, tropical fruit too, a refreshing acid backbone, subtle spice, oak textures & creamy lees elements all in unison. Very pale salmon pink in colour with soft copper hues. On the nose it’s all about the raspberries / strawberries cream & a hint of spice. Pale straw, almost clear in colour with faint green hues. Fresh aromas of citrus, tropical fruit, green herb & savoury/ wet stone notes in the nose. On the palate lush flavours of lemon & lime citrus, passion-fruit, green apple & gooseberries, a crisp acidity & a stony mineral mouthfeel on the finish. Delish! Leveret Estate ‘IQ’ Premium Brut Methode Traditionelle, NV, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Mid yellow to gold in colour, a brief creamy mousse then a tiny bead (bubbles.) Rich aromatic nose with immediate aromas of warm bread / brioche & nougat, ripe stone-fruit & citrus notes follow. A crisp zesty & concentrated palate has a bright grape-fruity acidity, peach & apricot flavours and a creamy / leesy mouthfeel. Medium length, nicely balanced finish. Mills Reef Winery Reserve Gewurztraminer 2024, Hawke’s Bay NZ
Pale straw in colour with green / gold hues, oily viscosity. Wonderfully perfumed nose, with aromas of tropical fruit, mandarins, ginger, rose petals & Turkish delight. Beautifully textured palate – creamy, spicy, flavours of mandarin, apricot & ginger, a refreshing acidity with bite, lots of texture & mouthfeel, dry but has a residual concentrated sweetness on the finish. Bright, clear lemon-gold in colour, medium viscosity. In the nose aromas of ripe stone-fruit, red apple, lemon citrus, notes of warm spices & subtle oak. On the palate, sweet stone-fruit, spice & cashew nut oak flavours, a fresh citrus acidity, silky textural & spicy oak elements all in harmony. Concentrated, long & mouth-watering finish. Clear pale straw in colour with subtle green / gold hues. Lovely aromatic nose with notes of oranges, pears, peaches, lemons, limes & a hint of spice. The palate has a nice balance of sweet fruit, spice and citrus, bright acidity & textural elements from a little time on lees, the characteristics of all three varieties all in harmony. Another new release for this vintage – Pale yellow / gold in colour with nice legs (viscosity) A fragrant / floral bouquet with aromas of peaches, apricots & lime citrus, a hint of savoury /salty minerality note. Clear pale straw in colour with subtle green hues. In the nose, aromas of citrus & tropical fruit, hints of green herb & a savoury, salty note. Nicely weighted palate with juicy lemon & lime citrus, & passion-fruit flavours, a zesty acid backbone, slight oyster shell minerality. Mid lemon in colour with golden hues, medium bodied, light viscosity. There’s an immediate note of struck match, then ripe peach / nectarine, nutty & spiced oak aromas in the nose. On the palate, flavours of ripe peach, green apple & tart grapefruit, a crisp zesty acidity & fine silky / creamy textures, followed by nutty oak notes. Long, dry, concentrated fruit-forward finish. Rapaura Springs ‘South Brook Vineyard’ Pinot Noir 2023, Southern Valleys Marlborough NZ
Clear, mid raspberry to/ ruby red in colour, lighter bodied wine. Aromatic & subtly floral nose with dark cherry, blackberry & blackcurrant aromas, a hint of savoury green herb & warm spice notes follow. On the palate, ripe summer cherry, red & black berry-fruit flavours & a mixed herb note, all supported by a crunchy acidity & silky tannins; structured, complex & well balanced. Shiny pale straw with soft gold hues in colour, a light oily viscosity. Immediate notes of smoke / flint then fragrant citrus & ripe stone-fruit aromas, some subtle nutty & spice notes too. The palate has fruit flavours of ripe peach, nectarine, a grape-fruity acidity all nicely balanced with a hint of creamy malo mouthfeel, subtle minerality & toasty vanilla oak. Rapaura Springs Bull Paddock Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2024 Marlborough NZ
Bright pale straw in colour with the faintest green hue. Very pungent nose with aromas of ripe tropical & citrus fruit, green-stalk herb & a wee whiff of savoury / minerality (armpit?) The mid weighted palate is bright & juicy, tropical fruit flavours reflecting the nose, a zesty lemon-lime acid backbone & grippy, wet stone textures are softened with a little residual sweetness. Translucent ruby to raspberry red in colour, medium bodied wine. An aromatic nose of red cherries & black doris plums, subtle spice & savoury, earth notes follow. Delicious & concentrated palate with ripe cherry & plum fruit flavours, drying tannins, a lively fresh acidity & fine oak-spice notes. Bright & clear, pretty salmon pink in colour, lighter bodied rose. Delightful nose with aromas of red berries, raspberry, cherry & subtle spring blossom notes. Bright pale lemon-straw in colour with subtle green & gold hues, mid oily viscosity. Fragrant nose with ripe peach, nectarine & apple aromas, nutty / vanilla notes to finish. A mid weighted creamy & textured palate with juicy stone-fruit & citrus flavours, a backbone of grapefruit acidity & fine nutty oak influence. Nicely balanced & integrated with a juicy finish. Pale straw in colour with subtle green/gold hues, lighter bodied. Vibrant lemon-lime citrus & tropical fruit aromas in the nose, some leafy green-herb & mineral notes follow. A juicy palate with flavours of ripe lime citrus, ripe stone-fruit & pineapple & a savoury, dried herb note. The crisp acid drive & slight minerality adds texture & mouthfeel. Whole bunch Mendoza, fermented and aged in a Ceramic Clayver, this wine is pale lemon in colour, slightly hazy with fine residual solids in the bottle. Quite a subtle nose with stone-fruit & lemon aromas predominant then light yeasty / nutty notes follow. A creamy rounded palate has sweet peach / stone-fruit & lemon citrus flavours, nicely textured from 8 months maturation with lees stirring in the Clavers. Medium length finish, with complexity and a wee citrus bite – juicy & fruity, not oakey & buttery with the focus on the fruit characters. Very nice & very drinkable. Fermented and aged in Ceramic Clayvers, this wine is shiny pale straw in colour with bright lemon hues. The fragrant nose has tropical fruit, pineapple, guava & ripe citrus notes leading into a vibrant fruit-driven palate with juicy grape-fruit & lime flavours. There’s this wonderful crisp acid backbone & layers of texture from a ‘high solids’ ferment & eight months maturing on lees in the Clayvers, all culminating in a long concentrated grippy finish – a very tasty, crunchy & delicious savvy. Merlot predominant, medium pink in colour with copper hues, bright & clear. Aromas of apple, stone-fruit, sweet berries & spice notes in the nose. Softer berry-fruit flavoured palate with a gentle grape-fruit acidity – medium sweet berry finish. Still drinking nicely but has lost a little of the JDV! Made by Mills Reef Wine-maker Cam Duke. Bright lemon gold in colour, pale green hues medium viscosity. Fragrant & floral nose, sweet stone-fruit, apricot & nectarine aromas. The palate is clean & fresh still with concentrated stone-fruit / apricot flavours, a hint of honey, soft nicely integrated acidity & fine textural elements in balance – refreshing finish. From the Cellar / Wine tasting at the 4th Wall Theatre Wine Club with Michelle Fraser last year. Mid red cherry in colour to the rim, slightly translucent med bodied. A floral nose with aromas of dark berry fruit & subtle oak & pepper / spice notes. Lovely smooth palate with flavours of berry, plum, licorice and spices reflecting the nose, soft silky tannins, & a fine mineral / acid backbone, long dry concentrated fruity finish. Another from the cellar – purchased a few vintages of this Riesling a couple of years ago – last of the 2019… Pale straw in colour with green hues, clear and bright, medium bodied, nice viscosity. Lovely floral nose with honeyed stone-fruit, lime & lemon aromas, a whiff of kero! The palate is dry & crisp with an intense & delicious lemon / lime acidity and juicy citrus fruit flavours, nicely textured & aging beautifully. A crisp clean and concentrated finish. Lemon / gold with pale green hues – nice legs! Apricot, peach & sweet apple aromas in the nose, vanilla & nutty oak notes. The palate is medium weighted, creamy & textured with stone-fruit, citrus & nutty flavours – juicy, grippy acidity & fine oak influence provide body & structure. Floray Wines ‘Sama’ Pinot Noir 2022, Masterton, Wairarapa NZ
Mid red cherry to purple in colour, lighter at the rim, lighter bodied young wine. In the nose there’s ripe plums & dark berry fruit aromas, then a hint of savoury earth. The plum & berry fruit are reflected on the palate with a fresh acidity & soft silky tannins, all supported with a little oak spice, Nicely integrated, concentrated, dry but fruity forward finish! Young but showing promise. A 50-50% blend of 777 & Abel clones, best bunches from vineyard were hand harvested, de-stemmed, whole berry fermented separately on skins 4 weeks, then both batches pressed to blend, aged in old neutral French oak barrels for 18 months, bottled un-fined & unfiltered with a small amount of SO2 to protect the wine during bottling. On the palate, more cherry & plum fruit, a bright acid backbone & fine, slightly chalky tannins adding depth, Long fresh finish, a juicy crisp Rosé with a bit of weight. 10-5 & 777 clones of Pinot Noir from Maggie’s Vineyard were de-stemmed, macerated for 4 hours, gently pressed & fermented in tanks, aged in old French oak barrels on light lees, bottled unfined & unfiltered. Floray Wines ‘Sama’ Pinot Gris Rose (Skin Contact) 2022, Masterton Wairarapa NZ
Bright mid-orange in colour with copper hues, medium bodied, some fine solids remain. Immediate notes of ripe pears & oak spice in the nose, a hint of ginger-beer. On the palate the fruit supported by a grippy pear-skin texture & crunchy acidity all rounded out with subtle oak & a persistent dry finish. Only 11.4% too so quite quaff-able (serve lightly chilled.) Pinot Gris fermented on skins immediately pressed off to old French oak, light lees, no SO2 for 12 month before bottling with minimal sulphur. Sama means ‘time’ in Punjabi – The single most important ingredient in wine. Something a wee bit different but yum tonight – Pale straw with green/gold hues, brief bead with small bubbles. The fresh fruity nose is all about the passion-fruit, with a little stone-fruit & tart citrus aromas following. The fruit forward palate reflects the nose with juicy lemon & tropical fruit flavours, a nice zesty grapefruit acidity, whet stone minerality & a refreshing spritz on the finish. Inky purple to black cherry in colour, opaque full bodied wine, lighter at the rim. On the Nose aromas of dark juicy plums, a whiff of leather, earth & subtle warm spice notes. On the palate, dark ‘fruitcake’ flavours, stewed plums & spices all supported by a softer acidity & silky tannins. Very smooth, long, dry finish. Only 1,134 bottles produced, Gimblett Gravels fruit, basket pressed, 20 months in oak, drinking nicely after 7+ years. If you like Merlot you this is made for you. Medium cherry to ruby red in colour, translucent but a slight haze in the glass. The nose is concentrated & bright with red & dark berry / cherry fruit aromas, a subtle savoury earth / forest floor note too. Vibrant fruit-driven palate reflecting the nose, a zesty acid backbone & chalky tannins provide grip & texture, lighter bodied but with a long dry slightly peppery finish. Made from 93% Pinot Noir (6 different clones) plus 7% Syrah from Cirrus Estate & Cambridge Road vineyards. Indigenous yeasts, full malo, partial carbonic fermentation then 11 months on lees in Stainless with the occasional cap punch down, unfined / unfiltered. No oak was used during production. Darker red cherry in colour, lighter at the rim, semi opaque lighter bodied wine. Fragrant savoury nose with aromas of tomato stalk, ripe dark cherry, white pepper & a whiff of smoke? Lighter weight, crisp & juicy palate with flavours of dark cherries & berries, a hint of green tomato, a crunchy tart acidity, light grippy tannins & subtle oak influence adding texture & interest. Mid straw in colour with golden hues, ample bodied wine. Immediate waft of flint, gun-smoke on the nose then butterscotch, caramel popcorn, toasted nuts & spicy oak… Nice citrus acidity, ripe peach & nectarine fruit flavours, rounded out with layers of complexity from whole bunch, wild ferment, oak, lees and full malo treatment.
