Hans Herzog’s 2016 Nebbiolo Receives 98 Points from James Suckling – A groundbreaking achievement for New Zealand winemaking.

Marlborough, New Zealand – December 2024: Hans Herzog Estate, one of New Zealand’s most beloved artisan wineries, is proud to announce an unprecedented accolade for its certified organic 2016 Nebbiolo, awarded 98 points by the globally esteemed wine critic James Suckling.
This score marks a significant milestone for Marlborough and reaffirms the region’s capability to craft world-class red wines beyond its celebrated Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Piedmont, Italy, is renowned for its demanding nature, requiring meticulous care and optimal terroir to thrive. Hans Herzog’s journey with Nebbiolo began in 1997, driven by a passion for cultivating rare varietals.
Despite early challenges, including vines that refused to fruit, Hans persevered, employing traditional mass selection methods to graft promising budwood onto underperforming vines.
It took nearly two decades of dedication before the first barrique was crafted in 2005, paving the way for today’s 98-point vintage.
James Suckling’s Tasting Notes: “This is one of the best nebbiolos outside Italy. It delivers subtle yet pure cherry, raspberry and red-rose-stem aromas that follow through to a medium body with a concentrated center palate and a sophisticated finish.
The fruit comes through at the end and leaves you wanting more. Such endless length and satisfaction.”
The 2016 Nebbiolo showcases the potential of Marlborough’s diverse terroir, rooted in sandy, gravelly soils enriched with silt and clay. Handcrafted with a non-interventional approach, the wine underwent 36 months of aging in seasoned French barriques, followed by an additional four years in bottle, achieving Riserva-level complexity and refinement.
Therese Herzog, Co-owner of Hans Herzog Estate, shares: “This recognition is a testament to Hans’ unwavering passion and the unique qualities of our Marlborough vineyard. We’re honoured to bring such a distinctive wine to New Zealand and the world.”
