Featured Winery April 2024 – Postage Stamp Wines – Waiheke Island

This month we head on over to Waiheke Island to visit Postage Stamp Wines. Inspired by the beauty of Waiheke Island, Andrew Barnes and Charlotte Lockhart turned their dream into a reality – ‘A home in paradise surrounded by vineyards.’

Postage Stamp Wines Cellar Door

Postage Stamp Wines owner, Andrew Barnes dreamed of a home overlooking vineyards. Originating from the UK, it was only natural that Bordeaux held a special place in his heart. However, the paths of logic and love often diverge.

After falling for a Kiwi, Charlotte Lockhart, he found himself on Waiheke Island, captivated by the spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. As their love for wine grew, so too their vineyards, adding two more vineyards to the collection.

Since 2017, they have aspired to make wines that showcase the Islands terroir, while achieving a balance of approach-ability and complexity.

Today their range showcases the diversity and versatility of their local varietals, from sparkling wines to cellar worthy reds, with every wine guaranteed to be made from local grapes.

A Journey in Every Glass

Postage Stamp is a collection of high quality, boutique Waiheke Island wines from a selection of small, artisan vineyards.

At their home, nestled a near-untouched slope of grass, a perfect spot for a quaint vineyard of Marsanne grapes. From a distance, it mirrored the appearance of a postage stamp, which ultimately inspired their name today.

Over the years, their passion for vineyards burgeoned into an obsession, leading them to acquire small parcels (or stamps) across the island’s diverse landscape, stretching as far as the historic View East Vineyard.

This surge in wine production couldn’t possibly be consumed by one family alone, especially when it’s this exceptional! Thus, a couple of years ago, they made the final plot of land purchase.

They planted illustrious varieties like Roussanne and transformed their backyard oasis into the Postage Stamp Cellar Door.

Here, visitors can savour aged wines, diverse styles including sparkling, and indigenous varietals, all proudly sourced from Waiheke Island fruit. Starting in April 2024, the iconic Obsidian wines will also grace their shelves.

So, come for a visit, and discover why they believe there is ‘a journey in every bottle.’

Come visit their backyard oasis with views of the vineyard, chapel, and olive grove. A relaxing environment to enjoy a wine tasting or with a glass in hand.

Bus stops to Matiatia or Onetangi Beach are directly outside – Open 7 days a week through summer.

Postage Stamp wines produce a range of varieties and styles. Grapes include the standard NZ varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, but they also produce Montepulciano an Italian variety, and Tempranillo which originates in Spain.

Each wine is personalized with a name such as the Chardonnay where Ariki means “Chief” in Maori, Ariki referring to their classic yacht from 1905, still racing to this day. All these wines plus a Sparkling Rose, a still Rose and several earlier vintages of their View East and K3 Syrah releases are also available through the online shop on their website.
