This month we’re heading to Nelson to visit Seifried Estate, a remarkable place, nestled on the plains between rolling hills and calm shores. A place where generations of expert hands create wines that are uniquely Seifried, where each bottle is a labour of love, and every sip holds family memories and the tradition of wine-making flows through the family’s veins, connecting generations.

The Seifried family have been pouring heart and soul into every bottle since 1973, when Hermann and Agnes grafted, planted and tended the first grapes in the Nelson region, raising their three children amongst the vines. Today, they remain a family estate winery. They grow it. They harvest it. They make it. And they take meticulous care with each step, from soil to bottle, for the love of family and good wine.

As their business flourished, the Seifried family also grew. The Seifried children were often found sleeping beneath the vines as Hermann and Agnes worked. Heidi, Chris and Anna developed a deep connection to the vineyard from a young age. Today, all three children play integral roles in the family business, their early vineyard experiences sparking a lifelong passion.

THE VINEYARDS

The Seifried Estate vineyards sprawl across the plains of Nelson, the geographical centre of New Zealand. But for them, this place is the centre of the world. Every bottle they craft is a celebration of their home; capturing the unique terroir of this sun-soaked land; gentle coastlines fed by stony rivers, and rolling hills swelling to rugged mountains.

Tucked alongside the gentle coastlines of Tasman Bay, framed by rolling hills and rugged mountains, this is home. The Nelson region’s temperate coastal climate and unique terroir producing wines with intense varietal characters, bright aromas and well balanced natural acidity.

Today the Seifried family estate encompasses 330 hectares of vineyards, a cellar door and winery. Drawing on a deep well of family knowledge and care for our craft, they produce a range of wines with true varietal character. From lovable New Zealand classics to unexpected aromatics – at Seifried you will find remarkable wines for every moment.

For the Seifrieds, crafting world-class wines goes hand in hand with protecting the environment, the community, and their little slice of New Zealand paradise for future generations. All ten of their vineyards and winery have Sustainable Accreditation and everything they grow and make is 100% sustainably produced.

They’re proud members of ‘Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand’ – New Zealand has continuously been a leader in sustainable winemaking practices, and Seifried has been at the forefront of that journey. They have been a Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand member since the mid-90s when the programme was first established.

Seifried undergoes a rigorous external audit every three years to meet the programme’s expectations for excellence in sustainable viticultural and winemaking practices, ensuring the environment and local communities thrive as much as the business.

VISIT THE CELLAR DOOR

Visit Seifried’s Cellar Door and be guided through a curated selection of current and cellar release wines. With some of our most interesting wines open for tasting, it’s a wonderful place to challenge your senses and try something new. From fresh lively Sauvignon Blanc and fine floral Riesling to warm plummy Pinot Noir and intensely delicious dessert wines, there is something for all palates.

Learn more about their viticulture and winemaking methods from their friendly cellar door team and discover what makes Nelson a truly unique and exceptional place for cultivating and crafting wines. Families are welcome, let the kids enjoy the outdoor playground while you enjoy the wines. Non-alcoholic grape juice is also available from the cellar door.

THE WINES

The Seifried wines are the faithful companions of family tables – each sip is a reminder of simple pleasures and enduring traditions. Nelson’s gravelly soils and long summer days yield full, rich flavours for wines with true varietal character.

The Seifrieds grow and bottle a huge range of grape varieties. White wines include the usual, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Gewürztraminer but also some interesting varieties such as Gruner Veltliner and Würzer.

Red wines include, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Zweigelt and several reds blends. A Brut Methode Traditionelle is also produced under the Aotea label. With such a wide range there is something for everyone’s palate and pocket.
