Known Unknown Urban Winery Opens In New Plymouth

New Plymouth’s first urban winery, Known Unknown, opens its doors to the public on the 23rd of September. Located at 1 Davidson Street, Known Unknown specialises in making inventive, off-the-wall natural and lo-fi wine and cider.

Winemaker Jules van Costello explains the philosophy behind Known Unknown, “we make wine that allows people to dip their toe into the natural wine world, knowing that the wine they buy is going to be delicious and offers great value.”

From Thursday 23rd September the The Known Unknown cellar door and tasting room will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday every week selling the Known Unknown range of wine as well as New Zealand cheeses, charcuterie and accompaniments. As van Costello says, “Basically, we’ll have delicious things to go with wine.”

The opening festivities kick off with a natural wine bar pop-up collaboration called Bread and Wine, featuring local sourdough bakery Billow on Thursday 23 September and Friday 24 September from 5pm. The winery will be open for wine by the glass and delicious wine bar fare featuring the Billow range of breads.

Known Unknown is the winery formerly known as the much loved Te Aro Wine originally based in Wellington, and is owned and run by winemaker Jules van Costello and Lauren van Costello.

We were drawn to New Plymouth because we love the lifestyle here and feel like Known Unknown is the perfect addition to the exciting hospitality scene.

Please note: Our pop-up event Bread and Wine is able to proceed at COVID-19 Alert Level 2 with appropriate precautions and social distancing.
