For Villa Maria, these wines represent the culmination of over 60 years of winemaking experience in Aotearoa New Zealand, the distinctive qualities of some of New Zealand’s finest wine varieties and the lessons learnt along the way to hone the skills of both viticulturists and winemakers.

management and the passionate craft of winemaking to share the best of New Zealand wine with the world.
Across New Zealand we experienced an outstanding run of vintages from 2019 through to 2021. In over 30 years of winemaking in New Zealand, 2021 is a stand-out for me, with settled weather, perfect vine balance and clean ripe fruit setting things up for some stunning wines. This exceptional season is boldly reflected in the wine quality through its incredible purity of fruit expression, flavor concentration, palate texture and length.
Most notably, this year we welcome ‘Keltern’ Chardonnay to our prestigious Icon range with the exceptionally crafted 2021 vintage. The Icon range is only produced when an ideal growing season produces outstanding wines worthy of consideration. Since its first vintage in 2002, Keltern has truly established itself as the benchmark for world-class New Zealand Chardonnay and is honourably deserving of Icon status. Keltern is complex, thought-provoking, balanced and age-worthy, which is why this wine sits comfortably amongst some of the most exceptional wines Villa Maria has ever produced.
A few of my favourites from the Single Vineyard collection lie within the Sauvignon Blanc range. The entire range shows the diversity of expressions that exist across Marlborough’s vineyard sites and creates an elevated way for consumers to explore the concept of terroir in Sauvignon Blanc. My personal favorite is the Seaspray vineyard Sauvignon Blanc reflecting this coastal Awatere Valley site at its best.
The Ngakirikiri 2019 is another stand out; this fourth vintage is an exciting Cabernet Sauvignon from the highly regarded Gimblett Gravels, and with its depth of flavour and incredible ability to age, this is one to put away in the cellar.
This is the first year I have had the pleasure of working alongside the Villa Maria winemaking team and it has been a privilege to help craft these iconic vintages.
